Reports out of the Turks and Caicos Islands says US authorities have issued an extradition request for former Olint boss, David Smith.

According to the Turks and Caicos Weekly News, the request arrived on Monday.

An extradition hearing has been set for April 8.

David Smith was the mastermind of the Olint Ponzi scheme, which fleeced thousands of depositors of over 2-hundred-million US dollars.

He was sentenced in 2011 to 30 years in a US federal jail, after pleading guilty to 18-counts of money laundering, 4-counts of wire fraud and 1-count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

After the sentence, he returned to the Turks and Caicos Islands to finish a previously imposed jail term.

He was expected to spend six years in a Turks and Caicos prison but was released early this year, reportedly on good behavior.
