NBA bans LA Clippers owner for life

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been banned for life by the NBA in response to racist comments the league says he made in a recorded conversation.

Commissioner Adam Silver said he will try to force the controversial owner to sell his franchise. Sterling has also been fined US$2.5 million, and Silver made no effort to hide his outrage over the comments.

He said a league investigation found that the league's longest-tenured owner was in fact the person on the audiotapes that were released over the weekend.

"We stand together in condemning Mr Sterling's views," Silver said. "They simply have no place in the NBA."

Sterling acknowledged he was the man on the tape, Silver said.

Sterling is immediately barred from attending any NBA games or practices, be present at any Clippers office or facility, or participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team.

He also cannot participate in any league business going forward.

"This league is far bigger than any one owner, any one coach and any one player," Silver said.

The fine will be donated to organizations dedicated to anti-discrimination and tolerance efforts that will be jointly selected by the NBA and the Players Association, Silver said.

Sterling's comments were released over the weekend by TMZ and Deadspin, and numerous NBA owners and players have condemned them. Even President Barack Obama weighed in on the crisis, the first of Silver's brief tenure as commissioner.

Before Silver took the podium, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted out a photo of the NBA Constitution, saying "It exists for a reason."

The announcement of the sanctions came just hours before the Clippers will play Golden State in Game 5 of a knotted-up Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Several sponsors either terminated or suspended their business dealings with the team on Monday, though individual deals that some of those companies have with Clippers stars like Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will continue and were not affected. Still, it was a clear statement that companies, like just about everyone inside the league, were outraged.

The issues raised when the tapes were released over the weekend represent just another chapter in Sterling's long history of being at the centre of controversy.

In the past, he's faced extensive federal charges of civil rights violations and racial discrimination in his business dealings, and some of his race-related statements would be described as shocking.

He has also been sued in the past for sexual harassment by former employees, and even the woman who goes by the name "V. Stiviano" -- purportedly the female voice on the tapes at the centre of this scandal -- describes Sterling in court documents as a man "with a big toothy grin brandishing his sexual prowess in the faces of the Paparazzi and caring less what anyone else thought, the least of which, his own wife."

Stiviano is being sued by Rochelle Sterling, who is seeking to reclaim at least US$1.8 million in cash and gifts that her husband allegedly provided the woman.

Jamaica has been ranked as the fifth most miserable country in the world, according to a study published by the United States-based public policy research organisation, Cato Institute.

The Misery Index, which was created by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and published by Cato Institute, features 90 countries from across the globe.

According to the EIU, the Misery Index is based on the sum of the unemployment rate, the lending rate and the inflation rate minus the per cent change in real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

According to the index, the major contributing factor to Jamaica's misery is its interest rate.

Two other Caribbean countries were also included in the list, Barbados ranked at 27 with unemployment being blamed as that country's source of misery, while Trinidad and Tobago was ranked at 43, with interest rate being attributed to that country's source of misery.

Meanwhile, Venezuela is ranked as the most miserable nation in the world due to inflation.

Although she has never publicly said who she was dating, singer Ce'Cile yesterday confirmed that she is no longer dating fellow singer Christopher Martin, who also fathers her child.

When asked if the end to their relationship will affect their 20-month-old child, Ce'Cile says that will not pose a problem.

"I lost a boyfriend, my daughter has not lost a dad. It should never be entangled. He's a good dad," she said.

And although her daughter has been on tour with her in the past, Ce'Cile says it will be difficult to leave her to go away for shows.

"It's hard to leave her to go away. The travelling is going to get a little hectic. Now that she is going to start school, she won't (be travelling)," she said, noting that her toddler has been to places like Sweden, Germany and the United States.

Instead, Ce'Cile says her plan is to make sure her daughter goes to a foreign country every year. She says she also wants to make sure her child is versed in another language.

According to the website, indiewire.com, a film about the international rise of reggae legend Bob Marley and his Wailers band is reportedly in the works.

Reported to be titled Buffalo Soldiers (the name of one of Marley's songs), it will be distributed by Mandalay Pictures, with writer Barry Morrow (Rain Man) and producer Cathy Schulman (Crash) reportedly assigned to the project.

According to the website, the film traces Marley and the Wailers' emergence from the rugged Kingston community of Trench Town in the 1960s, to super-stardom a decade later.

There are no production details (budget, cast) on the project or if it has been endorsed by the Marley family who have long touted a film about its patriarch who died in May 1981 at age 36 from cancer.

At one stage, A-list Hollywood director Martin Scorsese was rumoured to be in the running to oversee the biopic but that reportedly fell through.

Two years ago, Academy Award-winning director Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) released his critically-acclaimed documentary Marley, which revived speculation that a film on the singer/songwriter was not far off.

Dancehall artistes M-Gee and GarrIzon are the latest entertainers to fall victim to the parasitic crime epidemic plaguing the island.

The incident occurred on Easter Sunday and Wednesday respectively. M-Gee was at a popular beach party in Portmore, St Catherine and GarrIzon was at The Popular Wray and Nephew Contenders.

"I can't understand why a man would leave his house to come to a party to rob a next man of his things that he works so hard for. We have the same 24 hours, two hands and feet, so why they can't go and work for their own too. Them must remember God nah sleep, their time soon come," the M-Gee said regarding the robbery of his car.

GarrIzon who also had his car stolen, said he did not want to comment on the matter as the police were still investigating. It is not clear if the young artiste will seek legal action against Wray and Nephew Contenders, since his car was stolen out of their designated parking area, under the lit area.

Despite the video of the Bajan beauty singing the song getting only 400 views since its YouTube release just over two days ago, YouTube users have admitted that it was Rihanna's video that led them to search for the original version of the song.

The Government is being accused of disrespecting the office of the Opposition Leader by allowing the telephone services to remain disconnected for the past two weeks.

The matter was raised in the House of Representatives yesterday by Member of Parliament for South West St Catherine, Everald Warmington.

Warmington told the House that the telephone at the office of the Leader of Opposition, Andrew Holness was disconnected because of the non-payment of bills.

He said the office was never treated in that manner when the Jamaica Labour Party was in Government.

House Leader, Phillip Paulwell, has given his commitment to resolve the issue.

The Police Fraud Squad is now investigating the employee of a bank who is accused of fleecing millions of dollars from an entertainer's account.

But while investigations are ongoing, the popular local entertainer is accusing the institution of moving too slowly to compensate him.

The attorney representing the entertainer yesterday stated that the banking institution has failed to honour its financial obligations to his client, leaving him deprived of access to millions of dollars which he legitimately lodged to his account.

Information reaching our news team is that the entertainer deposited the money over time to his account through a specific female employee at the institution.

Reports are that the employee had been advising the entertainer for over a year and advised him how to invest his money. She is said to have then signed off on documents advising her client that everything was taken care of.

The attorney said that his client was under the impression that he had been receiving 'special treatment' from his personal banker and had never joined a queue whenever he visited the bank, on the advice of the woman.

The discrepancies were said to have been unearthed last month when the entertainer visited the bank, and had to join a line because the woman was not at work.

The attorney stated that "He has two accounts and would normally leave the books with her and collect them a few days later, at which point he would check and it appeared that things were normal. While he was at another teller, he was told that one of the books he thought was a US account was not a US book, but in fact Jamaican ... The number coding in the books were different, but my client didn't look to see."

Additionally, it was outlined that the entertainer was misled as none of the investments he made were there.

Our news team was told that since the discovery the entertainer has been receiving the run-around from the local bank in his attempt to reclaim his funds. It is said that he has been compelled to make contact with the bank's head legal officer.

Yesterday, a Fraud Squad detective confirmed that an investigation has been launched.

Our news team was also told that it was the bank who contacted the police. We were told, however, that the female banker in question was not yet in police custody as the investigations are ongoing.

The History of Palm Sunday

Webmin
No Comments
he-is-risen.jpg
The celebration of Palm Sunday originated in the Jerusalem Church, around the late fourth century. The early Palm Sunday ceremony consisted of prayers, hymns, and sermons recited by the clergy while the people walked to various holy sites throughout the city. At the final site, the place where Christ ascended into heaven, the clergy would read from the gospels concerning the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. In the early evening they would return to the city reciting: "Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord." The children would carry palm and olive branches as the people returned through the city back to the church, where they would hold evening services.

By the fifth century, the Palm Sunday celebration had spread as far as Constantinople. Changes made in the sixth and seventh centuries resulted in two new Palm Sunday traditions - the ritual blessing of the palms, and a morning procession instead of an evening one. Adopted by the Western Church in the eighth century, the celebration received the name "Dominica in Palmis," or "Palm Sunday".

A Palm Sunday video is a great way to prepare for your church's celebration of Palm Sunday.

The Meaning of Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The gospels record the arrival of Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the street and shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David" and "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord" to honor him as their long-awaited Messiah and King.

These Palm Sunday PowerPoints depict scenes and images of Palm Sunday, providing a perfect enhancement to your teaching on this subject.

The significance of Jesus riding a donkey and having his way paved with palm branches is a fulfillment of a prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9). In biblical times, the regional custom called for kings and nobles arriving in procession to ride on the back of a donkey. The donkey was a symbol of peace; those who rode upon them proclaimed peaceful intentions. The laying of palm branches indicated that the king or dignitary was arriving in victory or triumph.

Palm Sunday in Modern Times

Today, Palm Sunday traditions are much the same as they have been since the tenth century. The ceremony begins with the blessing of the palms. The procession follows, then Mass is celebrated, wherein the Passion and the Benediction are sung. Afterwards, many people take the palms home and place them in houses, barns, and fields.

In some countries, palms are placed on the graves of the departed. In colder northern climates, where palm trees are not found, branches of yew, willow, and sallow trees are used. The palms blessed in the ceremony are burned at the end of the day. The ashes are then preserved for next year's Ash Wednesday celebration.

In the simplest of terms, Palm Sunday is an occasion for reflecting on the final week of Jesus' life. It is a time for Christians to prepare their hearts for the agony of His Passion and the joy of His Resurrection. Accompanied by her sister, Tami Chynn, and Solid Agency's Marlon Bourke, Tessanne was at an exclusive ceremony at J. Wray & Nephew Limited's corporate office in New Kingston, where the presentation was made.

The occasion was in celebration of the singer's accomplishments and there she was gifted with a one-of-a-kind rum created just for her.

Admitting to being a lover of Appleton, Chin described the moment as an honour.

christopher-martin-photo-4.jpgAccording to sources, two popular entertainers have had their motor vehicles confiscated by the police. One has been identified as reggae crooner Christopher Martin.

The vehicles were reportedly seized as part of a major crackdown by the Major Organized Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) and the Revenue Protection Division (RPD) of the Ministry of Finance.

It was being alleged that the vehicles were illegally imported, Christopher Martin's manager, Kingy, however, denied these allegations.

"We didn't import the vehicle. We bought the vehicle from a registered car lot. We went to the lot, saw the vehicle, liked it and purchased it. We have all the legal documents supporting this. Chris had the car for almost three years. This really came as a surprise to us," he said.

Kingy added that their lawyers are currently looking into the matter, but in the meantime, they are focusing their attention on Martin's upcoming debut album 'Stepping Razor' which will be released by the end of summer.

It is also being alleged that the son of a prominent politician also had his vehicle confiscated.

Incarcerated entertainer, Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer, has released a statement appealing the perpetrators of threats against journalists to stop.

The Jamaica Observer reported this morning that its crime reporter, Karyl Walker, and Abka Fitz Henley of Nationwide News Network have been threatened by Kartel's callers.

But according to the statement released through Kartel's lawyer, Tom Tavares-Finson, the artiste wants such action to stop.

"Such action is not helping me or my fellow appellants and is playing into the hands of the police and others who are seeking to discredit me and prejudice the fair hearing of my appeal," Kartel wrote.

SEE FULL STATEMENT FROM VYBZ KARTEL:

It was brought to my attention this morning by a member of my legal team that a number of persons including journalists have reported receiving threats from persons purportedly acting on my behalf.

During my sentencing hearing my Attorney Tom Tavares-Finson indicated to the court that I hold no ill-will to any of the persons involved in my trial neither the Police, Prosecutors, Executives from Digicel and certainly not any member of the Media who covered my trial in a manner which exposed the weaknesses in the Prosecution's case for all the world to see.

I reiterate the position "I hold no ill-well [sic] to anyone who was involved in my trial" and I put my faith in the judicial system and the appeal process on which we have now embarked.

I appeal to any misguided individual or individuals who may think it appropriate to seek to threaten or intimidate anyone, to stop it.

Such action is not helping me or my fellow appellants and is playing into the hands of the Police and others who are seeking to discredit me and prejudice the fair hearing of my appeal.

In the meantime I thank my family, friends and fans who continue to support and have faith in me.

The police are still at the scene of what is suspected to be a case of murder-suicide in the Oaklands apartment complex on Constant Spring Road, St Andrew, involving one of their colleagues and his wife.

The Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary (CCU) says about 11:25 p.m. yesterday the policeman, 31-year-old Davian Thompson who is attached to the Spanish Town police, went to the apartment where he lived with his wife, Latoya Campbell-Thompson and shot her. She was to celebrate her 28th birthday today.

Colleagues subsequently launched a search for the constable. They received information about 6:30 this morning that a body was found in the Shortwood gully, metres away from the apartment. The body, which had a gunshot wound to the head and clutching .38 revolver, was confirmed to be that of the policeman.

Thompson was on suspension from the police force for his involvement in a shooting incident in Westmoreland last year. Early investigations by the Constant Spring Criminal Investigation Branch have revealed that the policeman was not a licensed firearm holder.

After 135 years of service to Jamaican children, the Roman Catholic Sisters of Mercy have decided to close the Alpha Boys' Home at South Camp Road in Kingston.

The announcement was made by Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna at her ministry in Kingston Tuesday morning.

She said that the Government has been assessing the status of the 120 boys now housed at the facility to determine how many are suitable to be returned to their parents or be housed in other child care facilities.

The Alpha Boys' Home educational and music programme will however continue, Hanna said.

sherone-simpson.jpg
Jamaican sprinter Sherone Simpson has been handed an 18-month ban from competition, 10 months following her positive doping test.

The sentence was handed down earlier today by the disciplinary panel that presided at her doping hearing at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.

In announcing the verdict, Lennox Gayle, chairman of the three-member Jamaica Anti-Doping Disciplinary panel said the body came to the decision that Simpson was negligent in all the circumstances as an elite athlete.

Gayle says the 18-month ban should commence from the date of June 21, 2013.

This means that Simpson is eligible to return to competition on December 20, 2014.

The Olympian tested positive for the banned stimulant Oxilofrine at the Jamaican Championships last June.

She had blamed her positive test on a new brand of nutritional supplements given to her by her former physical trainer, Canadian Chris Xuereb.

Simpson was a first time offender.

A two-year suspension is the maximum sanction allowed for first-time offenders, and Lackston Robinson, the attorney who represented the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission, had told the panel during his final submission on February 25 that the athlete should serve the time.

Miss Kitty robbed

Radio host and MC extraordinaire Khadine 'Miss Kitty' Hylton is now picking up the pieces after vandals broke into her vehicle and made off with $200,000.

According to the Digicel Ambassador, after withdrawing the cash from a Washington Boulevard bank branch on Wednesday, she proceeded to Hope Road to collect a gift basket. It was while inside that the bandits struck.

Much to her dismay, the store attendant informed her that they had no security guards or security cameras on the property. The police were, however, quick on the scene, but there were no eye witnesses.

On Friday afternoon, Miss Kitty was rewarded with good news. While sharing the story in her radio programme, she was surprised by representatives from Stewart Motors who gifted her with a brand new BMW X6 to use while her vehicle is being repaired.

She also had scathing remarks for the thieves.

"The blood of Jesus is against unuh. Everybody has the same 24 hours so I don't understand why you should sit at home while I work and then come to take my earnings from me. When you partake in ill-gotten gains, the blood is on you. This act is so dastardly and evil. But I am not not gonna give up because the blood of Jesus is against every thief."

The ceremony was held last week at the Jamaica Consulate in New York City. Christopher Roberts (left), founder of Groovin' In The Park, and VP Records President Chris Chin with the awardees.

MARCIA Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, members of Bob Marley's harmony group the I-Three, were honoured with the Reggae Ambassador's Award in New York City last Tuesday.

The awards were presented at the Jamaica Consulate by VP Records and Groovin' Inc, co-promoters of the annual Groovin' In The Park concert.

Griffiths and Mowatt were recognised for their "supreme artistry, outstanding achievement and contribution to the development and promotion of reggae worldwide".

Veteran tour manager/booking agent, Copeland Forbes, was also honoured for his contribution to the music industry.

Griffiths thanked VP founder Pat Chin and Groovin' In The Park founder Christopher Roberts for the award.

"I feel like I am truly blessed as this award is deeper than music. Thank you for allowing me to share this journey. Without you I would not have reached this milestone," she said.

Mowatt, a born-again Christian, was also appreciative.

"Had it not been for God, for his gift and talents that he gave to me, I would not have been here this evening. So it is with heartfelt gratitude, I give thanks."

Amidst preparations for his live concert series and upcoming album titled 'Next Dimension', tragedy has struck leaving Reggae singer Teflon stricken with grief by the sudden death of his close friend and road manager Ricardo Lowe more popularly known as Blackman.

Reports are that on Friday night, April 4th several persons including children were at the intersection of Charles Street and Chestnut Lane when a group of armed men sprayed bullets on them. The 12-year-old boy reportedly died on the spot while Lowe man died in hospital. Unconfirmed reports are that the shooting incident stems from an ongoing gang feud between men from Tivoli Gardens and Chestnut Lane.

A bereaved Teflon appeared evidently shaken by the news of Lowe's death. According to a senior member of Yard A Love the artiste's management company.

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Ricardo Lowe and would like to sincerely extend our condolences to his family and friends in this time of grief. He was an outstanding worker and devoted comrade to his job; and to see him lose his life in such a draconian manner is difficult for us to comprehend, but we must remain strong, his passing is a great loss to music industry."

At this time Teflon's Management is asking members of the media and music fraternity to be respectful as the entertainer moans in private.

New pot regime is going to pot

Webmin
No Comments
marijuana-photo-1.jpg
When Ottawa announced a way to produce and distribute medical marijuana, it cited several good reasons for doing so. Health Canada argued that a new system would make high-quality medical cannabis more accessible to those who need it. The process would be less onerous for patients, and the product less costly and less susceptible to crime.

But the orderly new regime that was supposed to emerge on April 1 has so far turned out to be nothing more than a figment of Health Canada's imagination. For patients, producers and doctors, confusion reigns. Among the barriers standing in Ottawa's way is a court injunction upholding the status quo, by allowing patients to continue growing their own medical marijuana. The government was planning on ending the legalization of home-grown pot for approved medical users, and turning the production of the only legal pot in the country over to a group of government-licensed grow ops. The temporary injunction stops that. Some patients are also planning a broader constitutional challenge, arguing that the new system will drive up costs and reduce access.

They don't buy Ottawa's argument that continuing to allow medical marijuana patients to grow small amounts of marijuana at home poses health hazards from mould to the threat of home invasion. For them, what matters more is the bottom line. Pot can be grown at home for pennies a gram, while Health Canada's official suppliers charge anywhere from $3 to as much as $13.50.

For producers, there's a different problem. The court injunction means that after investing millions of dollars in machinery and security in anticipation of April 1, they now may have no customers. Doctors are also distancing themselves from changes to the status quo. Many feel uncomfortable prescribing a substance that has not been subject to the same clinical trials and approvals process as pharmaceuticals. Instead of taking these concerns seriously, Health Canada until recently essentially ignored them.

April 1 was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era for medicinal marijuana in Canada. Instead, uncertainty and confusion mean the new rules are having the exact opposite of their intended effect. Many patients don't want to be forced to buy the cannabis the licensed producers are peddling; pot growers are out of pocket because of a court injunction; doctors responsible for authorizing the use of medical marijuana are wary of doing so. Health Canada's big plan is going up in smoke.

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Marcia Griffiths kicked off her year-long golden anniversary celebration earlier this year on the opening night of Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, and is now booked for Groovin In The Park festival in New York City on June 29.

"After weeks of negotiations, a deal was reached for the reggae queen to join Chronixx and other soon-to-be-announced acts at the festival ..." a press release from The PR Agency said on Thursday.

"We are truly honoured to have a reggae legend of the stature of Marcia Griffiths perform at Groovin in the Park 2014," Christopher Roberts, CEO of Groovin Inc, said. "This is her 50th anniversary in the music industry and she will be going all out to entertain fans and sweep them away with musical treasures."

The release said her upcoming performance is billed 'Marcia Griffiths and Friends' in NYC and will feature original I-Threes member Judy Mowatt, veteran singer John Holt and a reunion with her long-time singing partner Bob Andy.

Griffiths gained international recognition with Bob Andy in 1970 with their cover of Nina Simone's 'Young, Gifted and Black', which sold half million copies in the UK and Europe. She later toured the world with Bob Marley and the Wailers as a member of the I-Threes before hitting the Billboard chart as a solo act with her monster hit 'Electric Boogie'. Jamaica ranked fifth most miserable country

Webmin

cry.jpg

Over the Easter weekend, R&B superstar Rihanna tweeted a video of herself and best friend Melissa Forde in the back of a truck singing along to Nadine Sutherland and Buju Banton's 'Wicked Dickie'.

It is a time for Christians to prepare their hearts for the agony of His Passion and the joy of His Resurrection. christopher-martin-photo-4.jpgAccording to sources, two popular entertainers have had their motor vehicles confiscated by the police.

Signed: Adidja Palmer

Other hits from the Griffiths include 'Feel like Jumping', 'Melody Life', and 'Truly'.

Entertainers vehicles seized!!!

christopher-martin-photo-4.jpgAccording to sources, two popular entertainers have had their motor vehicles confiscated by the police.

Signed: Adidja Palmer

Griffiths and Mowatt will perform at the fourth Groovin' In The Park, scheduled for June 29 in Queens, New York. Chronixx, John Holt and Bob Andy are also headliners.

Other hits from the Griffiths include 'Feel like Jumping', 'Melody Life', and 'Truly'.
