Review of Evolution Riddim

Hemp Higher Productions has a hit on its hands with the release of the Evolution riddim which has a United Nations feel with artistes who are pulled from a variety of countries all over the world: France, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, and even Haiti.

As the name indicates, this project reflects an evolution of reggae music and introduces a selection of some of the best young artistes out there, from Jamaica and abroad!. The riddim leads off with UK dancehall ambassador, Gappy Ranks drops a song for the ladies in his unique singing style. He croons: "Treat her like a lady", as he serenades women in a deliciously sweet love song.

Guadeloupean-born heavy hitter Cali P also delivers the goods with the syrupy-sweet 'Sweetest Thing', a song carved in reggae oak and dedicated to the love of his life, his daughter. He uses his brilliant recording style to bring across a message that every parent will be able to relate to.

Red hot rookie Masicka has been raising evebrows with his unique metaphors and witty deejay style. His inclusion on this compilation introduces him to the European market and his plaintive, 'Why Mi a Work?' impresses from start to finish. Another artiste to watch for is Jahmiel who declares "Fly again", an inspiring monster of a song that focusses on the hardships faced by most people even while he attempts to motivate them to never give up, to rage on even against insurmountable odds. Fly again, he exhults, fly again.

This excellent production is rounded out by UK's rising reggae star, Randy Valentine, Trinidad's brilliant and talented Umi Marcano and French artist CHARLY B who all lay down sweet love songs which are guaranteed lady-pleasers, that will spike the temperature in the bedroom a little higher.

Other artiste to look out for include Di Govanah whose song, "Take a Good Look Around" is a reality song which will certainly remind most people on how important it is to live life in the right path and to not go astray whlie Jah Rain touches a nerve with the 'Lift Me Up", a brilliantly conceived conscious song. Jah Rain's energetic delivery about his faith and the support he gets from the most high in his every day life is truly inspiring.

Two of Guadeloupe's most talented artists Tiwony and Misye Sadik collaborate on the song "Awété pléwé penn" which will be a universal crowd pleaser whether you understand French or not, the melodies alone will captivate your ears. Another French artist appearing on the selection is SIR SAMUEL (formerly from SAIAN SUPA CREW) who features with young swiss artiste, Messager on the amazing track "Sans répit".

Last but far from least, one of Haiti's most talented artists lays down "Rejwi" - a captivating love song in his native Créole - talking about the joys and happinesses of being in a relationship and love.

As you must have realised by now, this album is a love-filled album, with a selection of some of the best talents in the local and international industry.

The production house's previous release was Cali P's album, 'Unstoppable' which entered the iTunes Reggae Top 10 charts in US, Canada and Switzerland. This is yet another winner for Hemp Higher Productions. Go get it.

Thirty families are now homeless fire gutted a tenement dwelling and other houses at the intersection of Beeston and Regent streets in downtown Kingston yesterday.

The fire broke out minutes to 11:00 in the morning and quickly spread, destroying several apartments in a building which housed about 25 of the affected families.

Firemen tried hard to contain the blaze, but it spread quickly and razed the buildings. Meanwhile, onlookers had to run for safety as a section of the shell of the burning building came crashing down.

Last night, Local Government Minister Noel Arscott and the Member of Parliament for West Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, promised the affected residents assistance.

McKenzie, while full of praise for the firefighters, bemoaned the little resources the Fire Department staff was forced to work with. Yesterday's fire, said the MP, was the seventh in less than a month in his constituency.

Head of the Kingston and St Andrew Fire Department Maxwell Hinds said it was too early to say what the cause of the fire was.

Jemini-Promo-Pic.jpg
Up-and-coming singer Jemini, describes herself as "one big bubble of enthsiam" as she makes preparations to visit Jamaica later this month to do some studio work with highly acclaimed producer, Barry O'Hare.

Although it will be a short visit, Jemini, who is also putting together her debut album, intends to make the most of this opportunity.

"I've always wanted to work with Jamaican producers in Jamaica and Barry O'Hare is legendary. I must send a big shout out to Chardavid (Iley Dread) for making all of  this possible," said Jemini, who was born in Canada to Jamaican parents.

Now working alongside Chardavid's Kings of King outfit, the Canada-based Jemini has steadily been earning her musical stripes as she takes her place as a conscious singer whose lyrics are laced with reality. Her most recent outing was at the Montreal International Reggae Festival, where she held her own as she opened for Chardavid and performed in front of thousands of reggae-loving fans.

"It was my second time performing on the festival, but this time around I was so much more confident and felt immense pride to be waving the reggae flag high," declares Jemini, who also sings R&B.

A singer and song-writer who also happens to be a nurse and a marketer, Jemini  is poised to transcend the music scene with her soulful brand of lovers rock and roots reggae music. Her debut track, No Turning Back, has been well recieved and is in  rotation on reggae playlists world-wide. She also has a collaboration with Chardavid, which will be released next month.

'Busy Signal' was sentenced in a United States court to six months' imprisonment and should be back in Jamaica by November.

The artiste will only serve two months of that sentence because he has already served four months in a lock-up, which is considered time served.

Busy Signal, whose real name is Glendale Goshia Gordon, was sentenced on a charge of failure to show up for trial, following his guilty plea in July.

The 33-year-old singer was in February 2002 slapped with two counts of cocaine-related charges, in the US, which carry a sentence of at least 15 years in prison.

He, however, fled the US before his trial was to begin that year, causing a warrant to be issued for his arrest.

The plea comes exactly a month after the artiste was extradited to the United States when he decided against challenging his extradition in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

He was detained by authorities in London last May and accused of travelling with false documents, including a passport that listed a different name. He returned to Kingston where he was arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport.

vybz-kartel-photo-3.jpg
Fresh off attaining global recognition and being named to the prestigious Fall 2012 Reading List for the Public Archive's Radical Black Books, Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto by Vybz Kartel is set to create more waves in the book industry.

Ghetto People Publishing will be hosting an unprecedented global social media debate on September 29, 2012 the date representing one year since Adidja Pamer's (Vybz Kartel) incarceration. The central theme for the discussion will be: "Is it right for a Jamaican citizen that has never been convicted of a crime to stay in jail without bail for more than a year?"

According to Chief Creative Officer Keecha Gooch, there will be sub-questions about the possibility of electronic monitoring for individuals on bail, whether or not artistes should be allowed to record while awaiting trial and overall comments on the justice system.

"This is not a 'free werlboss' initiative". Our company is about bringing issues concerning the Ghetto to the forefront, essentially giving a voice to the voiceless. We need to have intelligent debates about these issues and stop the practice of casting opposing opinions aside. Social Media will allow that to occur and do so in a big and meaningful way. All the information will be located on the web-site www.vybzkartelbook.com," stated a very upbeat Gooch.

Organizers noted that the format is tailored to give everyone a voice. Individuals can participate via twitter, facebook, blog, the chat room, text message, email or BB. It is the first of many that the company plans to host all based on the subject matters raised in Kartel's book. There will be a four hour time slot from 4pm to 8pm on September 29th  dedicated to the interactive segment.

The CEO of Ghetto People Publishing Michael Dawson declared: "The 'Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto' is a special book and the accolades attest to same. Our biggest challenge is to efficiently manage the market demand stretching from Zimbabwe to Australia, Rome to Rwanda, global prisons, army bases, schools etc. At the same time, we have to figure out which language next to publish in; we had thought it would be Dutch due to the large demand in Suriname but the demand in Francophone countries and France itself is surpassing every other country - though the Japanese may disagree", Dawson said with a chuckle. "It is just great to know that we took the risk of investing in a book that we know would be fought by so many but the content of the book is stronger than any opposition to its creation".

Though Vybz Kartel will not be present or allowed to participate in the debate, his spirit will hover in the room as he has been adamant about using his influence to effect change for the better in Jamaica. The road is not easy when representing Vybz Kartel, that means pressure, ridicule, rejection from all sectors of society but Kartel always says "Man a anuh girl guide, man a souljah so the war between us and Babylon has just began".

"I'm excited to see what's in store for Island Vybez Top 10" Producer/Host Winter said. Growing up in the US I realized that the only way to see the dancehall/reggae/soca videos was to catch it on an cable access channels and as the internet grew, on the web. As Dancehall/Soca music started to grow, I thought the demand would allow for more Caribbean videos to air on mainstream TV. In true fashion the genre was dwindled down to just being able to see the mainstream Caribbean artist like Beenie Man and Sean Paul but left a lot of other artist without a platform. "There are so many videos that many of our Caribbean people has yet to see, but there is no platform for it. I wanted to create a show where people can tune in check out the videos and discover a concert or business that they never knew about."

Lamothe is suing the publication over its reporting on the sale of a telecommunications company acquired by his government.

The deceased were identified as 36-year-old Ash-Marie Plummer, also called Theresa, and 73-year-old Alvin Reid, both of Granville, St James; Shantell Davis, 19, and Easton Chambers, 36, also called Brian, of Dundee, Maroon Town, in this parish.

It is reported that around 9:30pm Davis and Chambers, were at the jerk shop they operated in Maroon Town when they were attacked by gunmen. When the shooting ended patrons found both suffering from gunshot wounds, they were taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Davis is said to have been nine months pregnant.

In a separate incident Plummer and Reid were shot in Guns lane in Granville when armed men opened fire on a group of persons playing Bingo at a shop in the area. They were pronounced dead at the Cornwall Regional hospital. Plummer was playing Bingo while the elderly man walked into the line of fire. Plummer was two months pregnant.

Commander of the Area one police Division, Assistant commissioner of police Devon Watkis said early indications point to the lottery scam. He was quick to explain that the persons killed were not necessarily a part of the lottery scam but family members might be involved.

These four murders have pushed up the murder tally in the St James police division to 117, since the start of the year, representing an increase of 11 over the same period last year.

Cops clamping down on tinted taxis and buses

senior-superintendent-radcliffe-lewi.jpg

Senior Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis made it very clear that his team will be out in full force today. They will be making an effort to stop the illicit practices by the operators of some public passenger vehicles which often times threaten the well-being of students.

The head of the Traffic Division said his team will be listening for lewd music being played on the vehicles transporting children and they will be very hard on those with dark tints.

The Transport Authority has declared that low grade tints are accepted, but SSP Lewis says he did not agree because motorists are not adhering to the instructions and as such the police along with motor vehicle examiners will once more embark on a no-tint issue.

The police went on a drive last year to clamp down on buses and taxis with dark tints following outcry that children were engaging in lewd behaviour while travelling in these vehicles. The authorities were later forced to stop the clampdown operations after they were accused of double standards as the operators of public passenger vehicles pointed to the government-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company buses that were being allowed to operate with tints. The authorities then revised the tint grade allowing for low-grade tints on public passenger vehicles.

Haiti's Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe has sued a Haitian American weekly newspaper for defamation.

Lamothe is suing the publication over its reporting on the sale of a telecommunications company acquired by his government.

In the lawsuit, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said Haiti-Observateur's reporting on the sale of Haitel was "outrageous, scandalous and reminiscent of a tabloid publication."

The Haitian telecom shut down earlier this year because it couldn't pay its debts. It was then acquired by the Haitian government.

The newspaper has been publishing since 1971 and serves Haiti's large diaspora communities in New York, Florida, Montreal and the Caribbean. On its website, the paper says it has a weekly circulation of 75,000.

According to the lawsuit, most of the paper's online readership comes from Florida, which is home to the largest Haitian-American population in the U.S.

Island Vybez is a  monthly Caribbean countdown show that will give viewers direct access to some of the hottest videos in the Caribbean, spotlight new talent from the Caribbean entertaining artist interviews, showcasing some of the best Caribbean businesses, food, events and culture and much much more. This is not your typical countdown show and don't expect it to be.

island-vybez-photos-1.jpg
