Some say it was long overdue, Reggae icon Peter Tosh was on Monday (Independence Day) awarded with the National honour of the Order of Merit, during the Grand Gala celebration at the National Stadium.

Tosh, whose real name is Winston Hubert McIntosh, was honoured for his contribution to the evolution of Jamaican popular music. Some other entertainment personalities honoured with the Order of Jamaica were Bunny Wailer and Toots Hibbert. Peter Asbourne was also honoured with the Order of Distinction.

A founding member of The Wailers group - whose core comprised Bob Marley and Bunny 'Wailer' Livingston - Tosh heads a list of outstanding Jamaicans being bestowed National Honours and Awards.

The official ceremony is held at the governor general's residence at King's House in St Andrew in October.
