Everyone that turned out to the Grand 50th Birthday celebration at the national stadium yesterday evening had on a piece of black, green, gold or a combination of all three. Thousands crammed inside the national stadium to be entertained and reminded just how rich our culture is.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Opposition Leader Andrew Holness were all in attendance. Among the special guests last evening were President of the Republic of South Africa Jacob Zuma; General Colin Powell, former Secretary of State of the United States of America, representing President Barack Obama; Yvette Clarke, United States Congresswoman, representing New York's 11th Congressional District, which includes Brooklyn, a focal point of the Jamaican Diaspora; and Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, secretary general of the Caribbean Community. Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar; Prime Minister of Guyana Samuel Hinds; Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice of the United Kingdom Kenneth Clarke; and Minister of the Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan.

Some would have thought that with Ernesto looming over our heads then the stadium would not see a full capacity turn out, but they thought wrong. That did not deter men, women and children from turning up to celebrate Jamaica's 50th in fine style.
