Bottles thrown at Dancehall Queen competition

Early Sunday morning two persons, a male and a female, were arrested in connection with a bottle throwing incident that marred the annual Red Label Wine Dancehall Queen 2012 Competition.

The event was staged at Pier1 in Montego Bay. Patrons became irate and began throwing bottles after they announced Sherine 'Sher Rumbar' Scarlett of Portmore as the winner. Fans believed, Montego Bay native Keja 'Tall Up' Christie should have actually been crowned the winner of the Dancehall Queen competition.

She seemed to be the crowds favorite throughout the entire proceeding, she was however placed fourth, fans compliant bitterly that they cheated her out of top three and eventually the crown.

Proceeds from the Dancehall Queen competition go towards the Brian 'Big Head' Martin Foundation. The foundation has been providing scholarships to tertiary level students, especially from Montego Bay inner-city communities since 2005.

The Jamaica Public service defence team is now planning its appeal after the Supreme Court yesterday ruled that the exclusive license granted to them is not valid.

Queen's Counsel (QC) Michael Hylton, who represents the JPS, said JPS did not apply for a stay of the judge's ruling because the court did not strike down the license which was granted to JPS.

The ruling means that the minister, in granting a licence, cannot fetter his discretion precluding other applicants from entering the market, and that was the heart of the claimants' case.

Even though the judged ruled the licence as invalid, he also made it clear that the minister had the lawful authority to grant licence to a one operator to provide electricity, whether generation, distribution and retailing for the whole Island.

High electricity cost is what led disgruntled customers to challenge the exclusive licence granted to JPS by the then minister of mining and energy in 2001.

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) was also a defendant as the claimants put forward the argument that it recommended the amendment to the exclusive licence. But Judge Sykes said the OUR, acted within its statutory remit, and there was no evidence to prove that it made the recommendation.

Costs were awarded in favour of the claimants against the attorney general and the JPS.

Tifa and Stacious speak out

Tifa and Stacious may have placed themselves in the line of fire but they believe it's a risk worth taking, if it will get them the justice they deserve. Both female artistes claim that they were treated with less respect than they deserved by organizers of the recently concluded Reggae Sumfest stage show.

The Dancehall Diva's gave rousing sets during their appearances on Reggae Sumfest's Dancehall Night Thursday July 19th. Despite the positive receptions and feedback they got from fans, both artistes insist that negative vibrations could be felt backstage as the highly regarded Dancehall divas have come forward with allegations of gender discrimination and prejudice following the treatment they received at Reggae Sumfest 2012.

Tifa and Stacious appeared on a television interview voicing their grievances regarding Sumfest while alleging that promoters of the stage show exercised bias throughout the night. According to Tifa, she's done enough in her career to warrant better treatment.

"10 o'clock I go on the stage and I feel like I've earned my place in Reggae/Dancehall, I've earned my time and my spotlight and my shine. I just feel like it was very disrespectful how dem deal wid it, like yuh haffi go pon stage now."

She Kept herself hydrated but was hopping to and from the restroom, as she waited for yesterday's evening session. It was probably the longest one hour and 40 minutes of her life, but it proved to be worthwhile in the end, as Jamaican swimmer Alia Atkinson kept her medal hopes alive and is the first Jamaican in a final at the Olympic Games in London.

The three-time Jamaican Olympian and Canadian Tera Van Beilen stood alone in Aquatics Centre where only one could leave the pool with a place among the top-eight 100m breaststroke finalists in the Olympics.

This swim-off became necessary after they both tied for fourth place and the final qualifying spot in their semi-finals earlier yesterday evening. Alia is the Jamaican to win a swimming heat at an Olympic Games ( Sion Brinn won his 50m and 100m freestyle heats at the Atlanta 1996 games).

Atkinson, is determined to become the first Jamaican to medal at an Olympic Games, and she was not about to let that dream be taken away by a 19-year-old Canadian. She got a strong start and powered through after the 50m to win and secure her spot in the finals, which is set for 2:15pm (Jamaican Time, 8:15pm British Time)

"My main goal coming here is to make the final, and I just told myself that she (Van Beilen) was not going to stop me," Atkinson asserted shortly after her race.

The Trinidad Express reports that both men are to appear in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court today, charged with committing the act of cruelty against the child.

They reportedly stripped the boy naked and locked him in the kennel with a pitbull for not listening.

Police said a female relative accused of striking the boy with a belt buckle to his head has been detained pending further investigation.

Officers said the woman told them she was not there when the boy claimed she struck him.

US man with huge penis stopped at airport

A man known for his enormous penis was stopped by security at San Francisco International Airport and questioned about the bulge in his pants.

Jonah Falcon, 41, has an organ which is 9.5 inches long when flaccid and 13 inches (33 centimeters) erect, according to Rolling Stone magazine. He has featured in a number of documentaries about the world's biggest penises.

He was returning to New York from San Francisco when he was stopped, after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents saw a bulge hanging down over his left upper thigh.

"They wanted to know if I had something in my pockets, and when I said no, they asked if I had some sort of growth," he said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

He told them it was his penis, and they checked around his crotch, although not too closely. He was delayed for five minutes. The incident was not his first. "I've gone through the (scanner) before, and I wasn't worried.

"What was the worst that was going to happen? I was going to have to whip it out for them? I'm used to that. Sometimes when people ask me about it, if I'm feeling up to it, I'll just show them."

In a tweet at the time Falcon said: "TSA didn't know what to make of the massive bulge on my thigh. Even after I went through that body scanner that shows you naked..."

A 2003 Rolling Stone story entitled "Mr. Big" reported that Falcon's penis was eight inches long when he was only 10 years old. It quoted his mother as saying his organ size was genetic.

"He was born like that, and he was always big for his age. But it's not his big penis, it's society's need to fixate on it. We're in a world where men see their manhood in their penises."

Reports are that more arrests have been made in the United States in connection with the Jamaican lottery scam.

Two residents of St. Louis, Missouri are facing sentencing in October after pleading guilty to the scam which targets retirees from across the US.

The authorities say 32-year-old Andre DePass and 24-year-old Jayneise Hampton pleaded guilty yesterday to several charges.

A third suspect, 33-year-old Nollis Hudson of Montego Bay, St. James remains at large.

Court documents say Mr. Hudson phoned retirees and told them they had won the Jamaican lottery, but needed to electronically transmit or mail funds to pay the taxes on their prize.

He allegedly used personal information from the retirees to obtain Social Security funds through prepaid debit cards.

Federal prosecutors say DePass and Hampton kept 20 percent of the money and wired the rest to Mr. Hudson in Jamaica.

Usher's stepson Kile Glover has died after his parents agreed to take the child off life support 21 days after he lost consciousness following a jet-ski accident on Lake Lanier in Georgia.

The 11-year-old son of the singer's ex-wife Tameka Foster was declared brain dead by doctors after he was knocked out when an inflatable raft he was playing on collided with a watercraft driven by a family friend.

Glover and a 15-year-old female were airlifted to the children's healthcare unit at Atlanta's Egleston Pediatric Hospital.

The girl reportedly suffered a cut to the head and a broken arm, while Glover took the brunt of the trauma to his head and slipped into a coma.

Stars including Whoopi Goldberg and Jamie Foxx have taken to Twitter.com to pay tribute to the youngster.

Goldberg writes, "Condolences Usher and Tameka Foster so sorry for ur (your) loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you," and Foxx writes, "My heart goes out to Usher and Tameka... for their loss".

Singer Toni Braxton tweeted, "My heart and prayers are with Tameka and Usher and their families. I'm sorry for your lost (sic), I'm here for both of you. From my family to yours".

Local authorities launched an investigation into the incident and the jet-ski driver has been identified as family friend Jeffrey S. Hubbard. No charges have been filed.

Dancehall night has come and gone but still is one of the most talked about topics.

Although the female artistes were given very early performance times, Stacious, Tifa and Spice gave solid performances which excited the crowd.

Konshens, I Octane, Khago, Popcaan and Bounty Killer also performed solid sets. Konshens called on 20 back up dancers to the stage and then launched into his single 'Stop Sign' much to the delight of the crowd.

Artiste I Octane had the place on fire as he called on fire eaters during his set which was well received by the crowd.

Tommy Lee, who is from Montego-Bay also gave a good performance and could do no wrong for his home town.

Lady Saw was officially crowned the Queen of the Dancehall at Sumfest.

Overall, all the artistes delivered a good set.

Persons were, however, disgruntled that Stacious, Tifa and Spice all performed before 11pm.

The running order of the show was a bit disappointing and was not properly structured.

Busy Signal pleads guilty

busy-signal-photos-2.jpg

Artiste Busy Signal, who was extradited a few months ago to face a charge of absconding bail, pleaded guilty in court on Thursday.

Busy Signal admitted that he left the United States 10 years ago before his scheduled trial on drug charges. In court., the deejay pleaded guilty to one count of failure to appear in court.

Reports are that Busy Signal could face between 12 to 18 months in prison and a fine of US$3,000 to US$30,000, under sentencing guideline recommendations.
A sentencing date has not been set.

While the cocaine charge still exists, the United States doesn't have jurisdiction to prosecute Gordon on those counts at this time.

Officials report that once Busy Signal serves his sentence, he will be given 45 days to return to Jamaica. If he remains in the US after that, he could be arrested on the drug charges.

Fast-rising Dancehall star, Potential Kidd could soon be facing his own share of legal woes as the deejay stand accused by an American promoter of stealing money.

Dwayne 'Garry Dreamaz' Grant, a New Jersey based promoter insists that Potential Kidd, his booking agent and manager scammed multiple event planners in the United States for large sums of money. Reportedly, promoters have substantial evidence of these alleged scams; showing signed contracts and receipts that were sent to members of Potential Kidd's team despite the fact that the A Yah So Nice deejay could not travel to the United States, while also revealing that the artiste never informed them of his inability to fly to the North American country.

Grant intimated that he had dialogue with Potential Kidd and his team since April when he secured the deejay's services for shows on July 13 and 14 in New York and New Jersey respectively where they agreed on a sum of US$6,300 for both shows.

In a press release, Grant stated that "Back in April, I was introduced to Theresa Small of Terri Booking Agency by a friend. As to what I was told, she is the booking agency for Dwayne Taylor aka Potential Kid. I spoke to Theresa back in April and she told me nothing is guarantee until a deposit was made."

"After I sent the money, Theresa introduced me to Angeletta who is Dwayne Taylor's manager. I spoke to her and she asked me about the deposit, so I told her I sent the money to Theresa... Two months later Jason and I sent another US$600 to put towards airfare. My date [for the show] was July 14, 2012 but five days before I was told he did not have a visa for the USA, I was told he will be going to immigration but to my understanding, he did not go. Even up to the day before the events on Friday and Saturday, Potential Kid had not yet made an appearance at immigration to obtain a visa and work permit."

According to reports, two other promoters fell victim to this alleged scam; one of them being Ageable Jason of Boomerang Promotions, who intimated that he went through a similar process with Potential Kidd.

"Basically, we send the money for Potential Kid for a date on July 13 to perform at a venue in the Bronx named Best Party Place aka Social Gathering Palace. After we sent all the money I was supposed to then wait for a while for a commercial when the artist supposed to be in New York July 6, because he supposed to perform on the 7th in Mount Vernon. So after I found out he wasn't coming for the 6th, I was informed that he didn't get his work permit as yet but I was guaranteed by his manager that he will get it for the show on the 13th in New York and the 14th in New Jersey. So as days go by, we keep getting put off. 'Tomorrow, tomorrow' we will get the latest news. So finally Wednesday into Thursday, after we spend up all our money to go on the road, to promote on radio stations, paying people to promote, rent club, etc. we found out that he wasn't coming because he don't have a visa and etc." he said.

As a result, Grant insists that he intends to sue Potential Kidd and his team for their alleged actions. Furthermore, he revealed that Potential Kidd's manager, Angeletta called him on July 17, claiming that she will refund the money but that it will take some time due to the fact that the deejay is broke.

Grant later spoke to Potential Kidd, who vehemently denied the allegations, insisting that his manager lied and that she stole the promoter's money.

Nevertheless, Grant insists that he's pursuing legal action against Potential Kidd and his team not just because of money, but due to principle as he feels that it's unfair for this happen to so many promoters. According to Grant, with the help of Jamaican PR agent, Lesley Hayles who helped parlay his story as well as a prominent entertainment lawyer that's he's hired, he will retrieve all that has been stolen from him.

nelson-mandela.jpg
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela celebrates his 94th birthday today, Wednesday  18 July 2012 and with that the world marks its third Mandela Day.

The United Nations declared Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009, meant to recognise the 67 years of his life fighting for human rights, peace, and reconciliation.

Nelson is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first ever to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before being elected President, Mandela was a militant anti-apartheid activist, and the leader and co-founder of  the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Mandela went on to serve 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in 1994. As President, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation, while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty and inequality in South Africa.

In South Africa, Mandela is often known as Madiba, his Xhosa clan name. Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades.

The container was loaded in Panama and destined to Barbados via Kingston.

truvada.jpg
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Monday a Gilead Sciences Inc.GILD +1.66% HIV drug for use in certain healthy people to help prevent them from contracting the virus that causes AIDS.

The move, which was expected, marks a milestone in the three-decade effort to prevent HIV and AIDS. Truvada was previously approved for use in combination with other drugs to treat HIV. The new approval marks the first time the FDA has approved a drug to prevent HIV infection. The approval allows Truvada to be used in people who are considered at high risk of becoming infected with HIV, such as those who have an HIV-infected partner.

The FDA said Truvada, a pill taken daily, is to be used in combination with safe-sex practices, such as condom use, to cut the risk of sexually acquired HIV infection in adults. The agency said doctors need to test patients to make sure they are HIV-negative before prescribing Truvada and do follow-up testing every three months. The use of Truvada alone in a person who might become infected with HIV won't treat the virus effectively.

Truvada is a combination of two medicines that make it harder for HIV to multiply in the body. Wall Street analysts said approval of Truvada as a prevention tool is unlikely to add much to the product's sales because it is already being used for this purpose in limited cases, such as when heterosexual couples with one HIV-positive partner try to conceive a child.

Gilead said it has developed FDA-approved materials to educate doctors and patients about how to appropriately use Truvada and will provide vouchers for free HIV testing and condoms.

In May, a federal advisory panel voted to support the expanded use of Truvada in gay and bisexual men and heterosexual couples in which one partner is HIV negative.

In the U.S., about 1.2 million people are infected with HIV and about 50,000 new infections are diagnosed each year, a level that has been stable for the past decade. Medical experts said additional approaches are needed to lower the rate of new infections but were divided on whether Truvada should be approved.

One big concern is whether healthy people would adhere to pill's daily-dose regimen, which is necessary for it to work, and whether the use of the medicine might prompt people to drop other prevention measures such as condom use.

While two federally funded clinical studies submitted by Gilead in support of Truvada showed it could substantially lower a person's risk of contracting HIV, another study looking at Truvada for prevention was stopped last year because too few people were taking the medicine properly to show whether it might work.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a global AIDS organization that provides medical care and services to HIV-infected people, called the FDA's approval of Truvada for HIV prevention "reckless" and criticized the agency for not requiring proof of a negative-HIV test in users. In March, the group had filed a petition with the agency urging it to reject Truvada's application, citing concerns about drug side effects, the nearly $14,000 annual cost of the drug and the difficulty of sticking with a daily pill regimen.

The FDA said possible serious side effects were kidney problems and bone loss but that these weren't common. The less serious but more common side effects were nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the agency said.

According to reports, R&B star Usher's ex-wife Tameka Foster can't afford to keep her ailing son on life-support much longer as his insurance coverage is about to expire.

Kyle Glover, 11, was declared brain dead last week following a jet ski accident, but Tameka has not lost hope that her son can make a drastic recovery.

But Tameka can only keep Kyle on life-support as long as her insurance company agrees to pay, otherwise she doesn't have the funds to cover the enormous hospital bills.

The insurance company hasn't set a specific deadline, but they've made it clear they're only willing to shell out coverage for a couple months.

Sources say that Usher, who helped raise step-son Kyle for several years, has been supportive in this difficult time but has not offered to pay for any medical bills.

Kyle was struck in the head by a jet ski while inner tubing on Lake Lanier - doctors declared him brain dead days later.

Jodi-Ann Gray, the KOOL FM personality who was shot as she attempted to enter her Portmore home, gave birth to a baby girl yesterday.

The child was born in a hospital overseas and mother and child are reportedly doing well.

As Gray was about to leave her motorcar, she was pounced upon by a man who shot her once in the face and twice in the shoulder. She was hospitalised and spent several weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a bullet which had lodged in her throat.

The attack took place in April this year and minutes after shots were fired quick action by the police resulted in the arrest of three men, one of whom was Gray's co-worker Wayne White.

White has since been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and shooting with intent. White is also rumored to be the father of Gray's child.

White's crony, Safari Farr, has also been charged with the same offenses. The third man is yet to be charged.

The three were held in a motorcar registered to White's wife. The license plates were covered with cardboard, police say.

Yet another baby - the second in two months - has mysteriously disappeared from the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.

In April, another baby disappeared from the facility and hospital personnel were unable to inform the distraught mother of her child's whereabouts.

The mother's experience was made more excruciating as it was the third time she was losing a child after carrying the babies to near full term.

That baby was reportedly born with a range of medical complications and died shortly afterwards. The baby, delivered prematurely after the mother developed complications, was given a 10 per cent chance of survival by doctors. The medical team made every effort to save the baby, who weighed 1.9 kilograms at birth.

According to a source, by all indications, the body of the child was mistakenly disposed of.

Persons were, however, disgruntled that Stacious, Tifa and Spice all performed before 11pm.

Happy 94th Birthday Nelson Mandela

nelson-mandela.jpg

No one was arrested.

The marijuana was handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Trans-National Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) for further investigation.

The less serious but more common side effects were nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the agency said.

tameka-foster-and-kyle-glover.jpg

No decision has been made as to whether or not to take Kyle off of life support.

Usher arrived at the hospital last night and Tameka has not left the hospital since she got there, sources tell TMZ.

Despite Usher's acrimonious divorce from Foster, he chartered a plane for Tameka, who was out of town, to be by her son's side.

Glover was sitting in an inner tube on Lake Lanier when he was hit in the head. He was unresponsive when he was taken out of the water.
