Bob Marley's widow Rita and her children have brought action in the United States District Court, Central District of California against several parties that have been manufacturing, distributing and offering for sale certain potpourri/kush products which bear the Jamaican reggae legend's name, image, trademark, persona and likeness.

Fifty Six Hope Road Music Ltd, the company founded by Bob Marley's wife and children and the legal entity holding the trademark, publicity, persona and other intellectual property rights to iconic reggae artist Bob Marley, is bringing the lawsuit. According to Hope Road's general counsel Timothy Ervin of the firm Gallant & Ervin, LLC: "Hope Road has never granted a licence to any party to use any of the Bob Marley IP [intellectual property] on such products, which have been made to resemble synthetic marijuana.

"Hope Road intends to vigorously pursue any parties involved in the manufacture, distribution and sale of these infringing Bob Marley products."

Hope Road obtained an ex-parte seizure order and accompanied by the United States Marshal's office conducted a raid on the facilities of the named defendants earlier this month, seizing thousands of illegal Bob Marley products.

"We have never authorised any party to sell these types of products with our father's image and likeness on them and are very upset to see that people are buying these products and being harmed by them," said Cedella Marley, a director of Hope Road and Bob's daughter.

"As a result we felt compelled to take action against the parties that have been illegally manufacturing, distributing and selling these unauthorised goods."

The police have joined in the probe into yesterday's mysterious chemical leak in a section of Portmore in St. Catherine to determine whether the emission was as a result of illegal activities.

After the fumes were detected close to midday, the Portmore Toll Road was ordered closed and the commercial district on Marcus Garvey Drive as well as Kingston Wharves evacuated.

Last night the authorities identified the general location of the emission but had not determined the source.

Reports are that five employees of the toll operations were treated for respiratory problems triggered by the fumes.

Environment Minister Robert Pickersgill is to get a preliminary report on the gas leak.

HONESTLY SPEAKING, I have always been AFRAID to admit it openly, because of the UNKNOWN of what it may cause negatively, to me my career my family and loved ones. Always with respect and honor everywhere I go, there is no doubt where I AM from, especially in my music. And I am nothing but PROUD of myself and my accomplishments, no one can take that away from me, IT IS already written in the History Books. But I often wonder, if  JAMROCK would have STILL been proud of me if they knew the truth from the days of SHY GUY. So even though I'm a woman of the world, living out of my massive duffle bags in different countries, week after week month after month , JAMAICA has been in my head with great LOVE and absolute FEAR. The harsh reality that people like ME are persecuted, beaten, jailed, raped and murdered everyday JUST for being who they are or JUST EVEN BEING SUSPECTED OF IT. It's what I saw too many times growing up in SPANISH TOWN and living in KINGSTON and it scared me to death. I COULDN'T WAIT TO GET OUT OF THERE. It is hard to imagine the anguish inside if you are not considered an ABOMINATION I and cannot relate personally. BUT GO AHEAD ...  IMAGINE IT for a minute.

And I can only image what it is like, living there and enduring that reality everyday 24/7 365 days of the year. I WILL NOT carry this baggage ANYMORE. In about 10 years I will B older than both my parents before they died. MY PERSONAL NEED to be 100% authentic and TRUE to myself and to make sure my children learn, especially from me, not to EVER be afraid to be WHO THEY ARE is stronger than any insecurities I may have had over the years. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WHO I AM from the moment I could think and had even tried to be THE OPPOSITE because of society's pressures. Trying to LIVE A LIE is horrible, whether GAY or STRAIGHT and for me, was the saddest part of it all because it only caused immense pain to everyone involved. I have been myself to the fullest ALL EXCEPT for when I came to my sexuality. And it is particularly tormenting U R a FREE SPIRIT. Only people who were very close knew because I told them. I've never felt comfortable being around or working with people who were UNCOMFORTABLE with that fact ...  and I thought for a long while that that would be enough. But it wasn't and it is not. A tour bus driver has been accused of sexually assaulting his 14 year old stepdaughter.

Reports are that the child was being assaulted since 2007.

It is also being alleged that the accused buggered the child and performed other sexual acts on her.

The tour driver is seaid to be from a Kingston 11 address!

R. Kelly is reportedly ill and Sunfest organizers are hoping he will be able to make it to the event this year.

Last year, R. Kelly had to pull out of the event due to a similar illness.

According to reports, R. Kelly's reps insist that he will make it to the festival.

Artiste entertainer Busy Signal who was extradited to the US a week ago, has pleaded not guilty to one count of failure to appear in court.

The artiste, whose given name is Glendale Gordon, entered his plea yesterday in the U.S. District Court in Minneapolis and was ordered detained.

He was charged with two drug counts in 2002, but left Minnesota before his trial. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

He's currently not being prosecuted on the cocaine charges.

Deanna Robins will represent Jamaica in China for the Miss World pageant.

Robins beat out crowd favorite Trishauna Clarke, to walk away with the coveted crown and title.

Robins copped the Best Smile award in the competition.

Second place went to Trishauna Clarke and third pace went to Rashida Beckford.

A US-based criminal defense attorney, is giving a cautious opinion about reggae entertainer Buju Banton's chances of securing a new trial, following Thursday's dismissal of  his case by the US Appeal Court.

Buju was appealing his 10 year sentence for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and the use of a phone to facilitate a drug crime.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeal not only dismissed the appeal, but reversed the not guilty verdict for his gun possession conviction.

The court also sent Buju's motion for a new trial back to the District Court to decide if enough evidence is there for a new one.

Florida-based defense attorney, Wayne Golding, remains cautious about Buju's attempt to get a new trial.

An intense battle over call rates is now on between the country's two mobile phone providers.

A week after LIME slashed call rates its rival Digicel has followed suit.

Effective today, Friday June 22 Digicel customers will begin paying 2 dollars 98 cents per minute for a call.

On June 15, LIME prepaid customers began paying 2 dollars 99 cents per minute to call on its network and internationally.

Postpaid customers will pay 1 dollar 99 cents for the same call while it will cost 6 dollars 99 cents to call a Digicel phone.

LIME says it made the adjustment in response to the recent reduction in cross network rates by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR).

This year's International Reggae and World Music Awards will honor and recognize Living Legends and Icons since the 1960s who consistently performing and working in the industry.

Today we feature two members from the legendary I-Threes , Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. Read below about their contributions to the music industry and the world.

In a career spanning forty years and still going strong, is one of the most influential female artists in Jamaican popular music. Hailed as the Empress of Reggae music, Griffiths gained international recognition as both a soloist and as a duo with Bob Andy as Bob and Marcia. Ten years after entering the music business she toured the world as a member of the I-Threes with Bob Marley and the Wailers. Subsequently she hit the Billboard chart as a soloist with her monster hit Electric Boogie creating a world class dance from the song called the Electric Slide which became popular all over the U.S.

Grammy nominated, internationally acclaimed reggae artist became the first female singer nominated for a Grammy Award in the reggae category with her Working Wonders album in 1985. Her earlier project Black Woman (1980, teamed her up with Jamaican singer Freddie McGregor. It is considered by many critics to be the greatest reggae album by a female artist and the first reggae album recorded by a woman acting as her own producer.

In the early 1970's, Mowatt was associated with Bunny Livingston/Wailer and wrote some of the tracks he recorded with the Wailers.  Mowatt rose to fame when she joined Bob Marley & the Wailers backing vocalist trio, the I-Threes in 1974.

Formerly a member of the Rastafarian movement, she converted to Christianity in the late 1990s. Mowatt now sings Gospel music. In 1998 she released her debut gospel album entitled Love and in 2000 released a project called Soldiers of Jesus

Christ which featured reggae artists Papa San, Lt. Stitchie, Chevelle Franklyn and others who became born again Christians. Her 2002 album Something Old, Something New featured some of her previous material as a secular artist as well as new songs and interpretations of traditional church music.

The funeral service for Herbert Augustus Smith, the father of international recording artiste Beenie Man and his brother Rohan 'Blue' Smith, will be held this Sunday, June 24th at the New Haven Seventh Day Adventist Church, on Columbus Drive in Duhaney Park. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.

The interment will be held at Dovecot Memorial Park in St. Catherine. There will be an event at 74 Hughenden Avenue, Kingston 20 on June 23rd

Usain Bolt sprinted away with over $1.8 billion over the past 12 months, according to leading business news publication, Forbes Magazine, which recently released its list of the world's 100 richest sports personalities.

Bolt, who has been the poster boy for athletics, has gone on to dominate his events over the past four years, all this time raising the value of the sport and, by extension, his brand.

His US$20.3 million earnings leaves him in the number 63 position, and again makes him the only track and field athlete among the 100 highest-paid sports personalities. The list accounts earnings between June 2011 and June 2012. Bolt is believed to command in the region of US$300,000 in appearance fees per track meet.

The bulk of the athlete's earnings come from his numerous commercial deals, with Forbes accrediting US$20 million of his US$20.3 million income to endorsement arrangements with companies such as Puma, Hublot and Gatorade.

Bolt's contract with Puma is his largest to date and is believed to be in the region of US$10 million - one of the largest shoe-company contracts in the world.

Nissan contract

The Jamaican recently added Japanese automakers Nissan Motors to his ever-growing list of partners, after recently agreeing to feature in the company's global campaign to promote the 2012 Nissan GT-R.

Under heavy police guard, Busy Signal was escorted yesterday morning from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, to the Norman Manley International Airport, where he was handed over to United States Marshals.

The law enforcement agents, including members of the Department of Correctional Services, bypassed the usual public passenger channel and opted to use the general aviation section of the airport where the artiste's travel documents were processed.

The police party, which hid him from the press, then hurriedly whisked him away in a convoy, on to the tarmac from which he boarded a private aircraft and flew out of the island.

Busy, whose real name is Glendale Gordon, was extradited to Minnesota in the US to answer charges connected to narcotics offences, allegedly committed in 2002. According to the police, he was offered bail after being charged with the narcotics offences, but later fled to Jamaica, where he has been hiding under a false name for more than a decade.

LIME Jamaica has responded to news that Digicel has asked the Supreme Court to review the law which granted the Office of  Utilities Regulation, (OUR), powers to reduce interconnection rates.

LIME's Managing Director, Gary Sinclair, expressed shock that Digicel has responded in this manner in the wake of his company's decision to slash call rates.

Digicel has asked the Supreme Court to grant it leave to apply for an order preventing the OUR from enforcing the new termination rate which it says is neither necessary nor justified.

The telecommunications company adds that with the new rate it will suffer substantial revenue loss and significant damage to its reputation.

LIME is not ruling out the possibility of  joining the OU, in the event that the agency has to mount a defense to the suit brought by Digicel.

LIME's Managing Director, Gary Sinclair, is of the view that the company can join the case as an affected party.

Two members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force are behind bars this morning after being held in connection with separate cases of sexual assault in Clarendon.

One of the incidents involves a minor.

Reports are that a Constable had been arrested after being accused of having sex with a girl under the age of  16.

A statement from the Constabulary Communication Network, CCN, says the incident took place on the night of June 9.

According to reports from the May Pen Police, the policeman lured the complainant into his vehicle and sexually assaulted her. A report was made and following investigations, he was arrested and charged.

In the second case, a constable attached to the Lionel Town Police was arrested for indecently assaulting a woman who went to the station on June 11 to file a report.

It's alleged that about 2:30 in the morning, the complainant was asked to accompany the cop to a room, where she was forced to perform sexual acts.

The woman made a report and the constable was arrested. CCN says investigations continue into both cases.

A 38-year-old man - who is said to be HIV positive - from Nannyville Gardens, Kingston 3, is now in police custody after being charged for raping the 16-year-old school friend of his daughter.

Reports are that the man is alleged to have assaulted the teen while she was at a sleepover at his house with his daughter in May of this year.

Forty-seven year old Gary Eames, who owns and operates the Moods Exotic Club in Montego-Bay was shot dead last night.

Last night, glass was everywhere when Drake threw a bottle at Chris Brown leaving the star with a gash on his chin.

R. Kelly is slated to perform at the 20th edition of this year's Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, Jamaica. R. Kelly missed last year's Reggae Sumfest due to an illness. He was however replaced by reggae crooner Cocoa Tea.

Trey Songz's July 20 performance (International Night 1) will be followed by R Kelly on July 21 (International Night 2).

According to Sumfest Organizers, R. Kelly was disappointed that he could not make it last year.

"R Kelly was so disappointed with not being able to come to Sumfest last year that we spent the whole year trying to work out a make-up date, which was Reggae Sumfest 2012," said Sumfest organizer, Johnny Gourzong, when questioned about the artiste in this year's line-up.

Deejay Deva Bratt, was offered bail when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

He is charged with indecent assault and assault occasioning bodily harm following an incident on June 1.

Allegations are that Deva Bratt tried to solicit a threesome from 2 women and when they refused he allegedly punched one and inappropriately touched the other.

The matter was reported and Deva Bratt was arrested.

In court yesterday, he was offered 150 thousand dollars bail, and ordered to return to court on October 3.

The entertainer was freed in January last year of a carnal abuse charge, for which he was arrested in 2008.

Cecil Campbell, more popularly known as Terro Fabulous, was yesterday given a suspended sentence when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

The thirty-seven-year old entertainer, who became popular with his songs in the 1990's, was convicted for malicious destruction of property. Reports are that last month Mr. Campbell used a brick to smash the window to the house of a Portmore based Justice of the Peace.

He was subsequently arrested and charged. He pleaded guilty and paid for the window said to be valued at 11 thousand dollars.

The Resident Magistrate then sentenced him to 90 days in prison, suspended for one year.

The search for the Michelle Coudray, the daughter of San Fernando mayor Marlene Coudray, has ended in tragedy.

Police in Jamaica have reported that Michelle's badly burnt body was found in a cane field. She had been working as a teacher.

Michelle Coudray was reported missing on June 2.

Reports are that the body was burned beyond recognition but friends confirmed her identity by her teeth and a bracelet she wore.

Mayor Coudray received the devastating news Monday evening.

Coudray is heading to Jamaica with her partner, Larry Achang, to confirm the identity and bring home the remains of her daughter.

On Monday, before learning of Michelle's death the mayor made a passionate appeal for her daughter's safe return.

Michelle was 38. She was last seen at about 12.30 am on June 2 in the Cornwall Courts area of St James, a few metres from her Montego Bay apartment, Jamaican media reported.

Michelle's mom has been taking care of her daughter's children, who are 11, seven and five years old.

Lauryn Hill owes Uncle Sam big bucks.

The IRS filed charges against the artist for failing to pay more than $1.5 million in taxes for money she earned from 2005 to 2007.

Hill then took to her tumblr account to explain why she did not pay rent.

She wrote that she stopped paying taxes after she felt it was necessary to withdraw from society for the safety and well being of her family, citing "false entitlement, manipulation and racial prejudice."

Jamaican Olympic champion Usain Bolt was involved in a minor accident in Half Way Tree, St. Andrew this morning at about 5:15 am. He was, however, left unhurt.

Reports are that Bolt was on his way home from a popular party when he met in the accident.

Bolt had just competed at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo Norway on Thursday and is preparing for the National Trials at the end of June.

This is the second accident in recent years that Bolt has been involved in. In 2009 he crashed his BMW M3 into a ditch in the vicinity of the Vineyards Toll Plaza along Highway 2000. The car flipped a few times before landing upside down, but the Olympic and world Championships star suffered only minor injuries to his feet.

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke has been sentenced to 23 years in prison.The sentence was handed down a short while ago in the Southern District Court in Lower Manhattan in the United States.

The 43-year-old was facing a maximum sentence of 23 years. The sentencing of Coke this morning by United States district judge Robert P. Patterson.

Five people are now dead following a three-vehicle collision along the Falmouth bypass in Trelawny.

According to reports, the crash occurred about 12:30 a.m involving a coaster bus transporting tourists, a Ford Explorer truck and a motorcar.

Reports indicate that the truck overtook the bus and collided with the motorcar which was transporting seven passengers to Ocho Rios, St Ann.

The driver of the car and three passengers died on the spot while another died in hospital. Two other persons were admitted in hospital in serious condition.

Several tourists were also injured.

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is to know how much time he will spend in prison, when he appears in a United States court this morning for sentencing.

Coke is facing 23 years behind bars after confessing to racketeering, conspiracy and conspiracy to commit assault. The sentence is to be handed down by Judge Robert Patterson.

Almost two years after being extradited to the United States to answer narcotics and firearm charges, Christopher Dudus Coke is to know his fate today.

Coke was charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and cocaine and conspiracy to traffic in firearms. Initially,

However, after failing to have the evidence excluded, Coke gave in and agreed to a plea arrangement in August last year. That agreement had him pleading guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering.

Last September, Coke wrote to the judge begging for leniency, but prosecutors are pushing for him to be given the 23 year maximum prison sentence.

The life of a St. Andrew woman ended brutally, this morning, following a vicious fight with her common-law husband.

The body of 48-year-old Doreen Headlam of Gordon Town was found on the compound of the Wallenford Coffee Factory, with multiple stab wounds.

Police are now hunting for the prime suspect, identified as Junior Hyatt, in connection with the murder.

Hyatt, who is also called 'Burro', is a deportee.

According to reports, Hyatt, who was overseas for some time, had been sending remittances to Ms. Headlam to construct a house.

It's reported that Ms. Headlam took a photograph of another house to convince Hyatt that the house had been built.

On returning to the community after being deported three months ago, Hyatt discovered that no house had been constructed.

This morning, Ms. Headlam was reportedly walking along the Mount Lebanon main road, when she got involved in a brutal altercation with Hyatt.

He reportedly slashed her throat, also inflicting multiple stab wounds, then fled the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Junior Hyatt to contact the Constant Spring Police.

The Serbian band Irie FM wins the overall European finals of the Rototom Reggae Contest in Italy and enters the line-up of Rototom Sunsplash 2012.

The Serbian Band is the first band from Eastern Europe ever to win the Reggae Contest, much celebrated within the European reggae scene. Chalwa Band & King Konsul from Spain, Arrokibi Roots from Italy, Sundyata from France, Ital Audio Band from the UK and Sattatree from Germany were the other finalists of the 10th edition yearly competition.

The Metropolitan police were forced to lock down a show featuring Potential Kidd at the Da Boss Nightclub at Woolwich High Street in London, England on Monday night after the cramped, overcrowded conditions became dangerous for the partygoers themselves.

"The club has a capacity of 2000 persons, and the club was rampacked, and there were at least as many people outside as inside so the police were called in to lock it off because the club was overcrowded," Potential Kidd's manager, Angeletta McKenzie sad during an international call on the night the show.

 

Potential Kidd is in the middle of a 14-gig tour of the United Kingdom that will see him perform at clubs in Nottingham, Birmingham, London, and Brixton over the next couple of weeks.

Potential Kidd burst on the dancehall scene like a surface-to-air missile earlier this year, scorching the airwaves with his catchy singalong single, A Yah Suh Nice, and its raunchier version was a monster hit on mixtapes all over the island. He followed up that success with 'Urgency' which racked up over 200,000 hits on youtube.

He then inked a one-year recording deal with VP Records on the strength of his popularity in the underground dancehall market. A 39-year old woman was found dead in her home with a sexual object on her stomach.

The woman who is from the Eltham community, located just outside of Spanish Town, is said to have been found with a blue dildo still in her grasp.

New York: Two years after his USA work permit was initially cancelled, controversial DJ Beenie Man, aka Moses Davis will return to the USA for a performance at the inaugural 'Groovin In The Park' concert on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Roy Wilkins Park, Queens, NY. Beenie Man was one of five top Jamaican entertainers whose visas and work permits were revoked by the Embassy of the United States in Kingston, Jamaica in April 2010.

Jermaine Forrest, a bus driver employed to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has been remanded on a charge of sexually molesting a student.

Reports are that the student, who attends a prominent corporate area high school was the only passenger in the bus on Wednesday, May 30 at the reported time of the crime.

Forrest appeared in the Half-Way Tree Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer to the charge under the Offences Against the Person Act.

Detectives from the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) say the female student boarded the bus at the Rockfort Depot.

The driver allegedly detoured with the lone passenger, stopped the bus then proceeded to the back of the vehicle where he allegedly held the student against her will and sexually molested her.

The matter was reported to CISOCA and he was arrested and charged.
