A male teacher of a high school in St Catherine who tried to discipline a student is now nursing an injury after being bitten on his chest. Reports are that teacher was attacked after he tried to take a canister of pepper spray from a female student. It is alleged that the 15-year-old was seen with the spray and was told to hand it over but she refused.

It was then that the teacher held her and was taking her to the dean of discipline on the school compound. The child got angry, wrestled with the teacher and bit him severely on his chest. He had to be treated for the injuries received.

A report was made to the police and an investigation was launched which resulted in the teenager being arrested and charged with unlawful wounding. She was offered station bail and is booked to appear in the Children's Court on April 26.

Baby burnt to death in St. Mary

Investigations are now under way into the death of an infant who perished in a fire that destroyed a house in St Mary last night. The child has been identified as two-year-old Brittany Bailey.

Reports are that about 7 p.m., the house was seen on fire. The mother of the child rushed inside to help her and was burnt severely in her failed rescue attempt. The child's burnt remains were discovered after the fire subsided. A call was made to the fire department and a unit arrived to do cooling down operations.

Two other children who were in the dwelling house at the time of the fire received burns and were taken to the Port Maria Hospital along with the mother where they are now hospitalized. Up to press time last night, no estimate was given for the damage.

Meanwhile, it is being speculated that the fire was caused by an illegal connection to the Jamaica Public Service supply. Just recently, a two-year-old baby boy perished in another fire that destroyed the house he was living in along Barclays Close in Savanna-la-Mar on March 19. The baby has been identified as Jermaine Clarke.

Reports are that he was at home around 4 p.m. on the day with his four-year-old sibling, and a woman who was babysitting them.

Neighbours report that they saw the four-year-old running towards them while saying fire was coming out of a television set in the house. Neighbours say moments later, the woman followed shouting 'fire'.

Fire investigators and detectives of the Westmoreland police are yet to find the cause of the inferno that destroyed the seven-apartment board house. The fire also damaged other houses, a two apartment and a six apartment.

The People's National Party (PNP) yesterday made a triumphant return local government. The PNP won 13 of the 14 local authorities. They also won 11 of the 12 parish councils as well as the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) and the Portmore Municipality.

Of the 227 divisions, the PNP won 149, while the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) took 76. Independents won two divisions. The two Independent candidates who won in yesterday's elections are Lester Crooks in the Riverside division of West Hanover and Paul Patmore in the Lorrimers division in South Trelawny.

The win for the PNP adds to the general election success achieved in the December 29, 2011 polls. Then, the PNP won 42 seats to the JLP's 21 in the 63-seat House of Representatives.

Among the winners in yesterday's election is Daren Powell, the former West Indies fastbowler, who contested the Malvern division in the St Elizabeth Parish Council for the PNP. Powell polled 1,687 votes to the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) Donald Simpson, who got 1,326 votes.

Less than 30 per cent of the people voted in yesterday's election and a few of the seats were determined by fewer than a dozen votes.

The preliminary count in the Montego Bay South East Division is now indicating a tie between the Jamaica Labour Party's Heroy Clarke and the People's National Party's Knollis King. But they have now been adjusted to show Clarke polled 1,329 votes to King's 1,329

Rumours that deejay Potential Kidd was arrested on the weekend are untrue. According to Potential Kidd's manager, Angeletta McKenzie, "I've also been hearing that. That's a rumour. I don't know where they got it from. I know he was at the police station doing some business."

Potential shared the same sentiment, stating that he went to the station to handle some business. According to him, he went to the Denham Town Police Station to look about a permit for a party for his mother.

Potential Kidd has been enjoying the attention he generated after his runaway hit song spread like wildfire in dances and parties and on radio stations islandwide. He aims to follow up his success with recent songs such as Apple My Baby for Seanizzle Records.

March 26th, 2012

For Immediate Release
Re: Sizzla Official Statement

To Whom It May Concern,

We work closely with many of the artists in the reggae scene and feel that your constant attack against the artists and the musical genre is unfair and one sided. Sizzla has not even begun to tour, yet press releases have been sent giving misinformation to the public about him performing homophobic lyrics at 18 other shows recently. The tour has not even started and Sizzla was not booked to perform in neither Canada nor England. False information is being written to malice and defame his character. It is good to remember that Sizzla has not been arrested, convicted, or charged with any crime and does not have a criminal record what so ever. He abides and will continue to abide by the laws of any State in the World that he chooses to visit or is invited to visit. It is his nature and his character to respect all.

Sizzla and all human beings are entitled to freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and artistic freedom as afforded to him by the United Nations Human Rights Council. With these rights he does not seek to incite or provoke violence against anyone, but will continue to speak out against injustices where he sees it. Sizzla and other Jamaicans will continue to support the laws of their country and are free to discuss these issues in a legal framework as a citizen of that country. If anyone has an issue with that, take it up with the respective Government and which ever laws they make, even if he doesn't agree, he will abide by. In the mean time, every attempt to sabotage or cancel a Sizzla show is a form of censorship against him and the musical genre.

Sizzla is a product of his own community, which is very much marginalized, poor, lack of resources, and youth programs. He has provided and continues to provide a platform for his community and Jamaica at large, access to community work, health, education, self- preservation programs, and youth development. Through his Sizzla Youth Foundation, he has done phenomenal work in Jamaica and throughout the world to help raise funds to develop the youth and possibly open doors that would normally been closed. We find it very hard to believe that people would focus so much attention on a Jamaican artist, whilst ignoring the bigger issues of this world such as economic strangulation of the poor, sickness, and hunger.

Why is it after months of promotions and advertisement, some wait till a few days before a show to try to cancel the performance? This is a form of censorship and is designed to create maxim economic damage to the promoters, the artist, the staff, everyone involved in the construction of the tour, and the reggae industry at large. We don't see you attack Eminem or other musicians who make clear stances against these same issues in the hip-hop, rock, and pop industry. It makes us wonder if there is a bigger picture being painted here? Or is it the fact that they just have better lawyers and bigger companies making money from them?

Patois the language that Sizzla uses to express his music are forms of metaphoric and allegoric expression. The messages in the songs are based on words that have been misconstrued and mistranslated. When he or any artists say burn, fire, or kill, they are not literal terms. In fact the words translate to mean several things depending on the context of its use. So when a DJ in the dancehall takes the mic and says kill Sound boy, it doesn't mean take a gun a shoot the Sound boy. It means that the DJ is going to win the competition. So interpret at your own risk but understand that in different languages, different words mean different things and Patois is a language very different from English. Historically it was used during slavery to prevent the slave masters from understanding the enslaved Africans as they organized for freedom. Obviously it still is misunderstood and confusing many.

It is very important for you to understand something. The term batty boy was derived from the rise of pedophiles and rape of young boys in Jamaica. That is why the term batty boy is used, so those that embrace this term, therefore embrace the raping and pedophile of young boys. This is one of the main reasons why there is such an outcry against homosexuality because in many cases in Jamaica it has been done where young boys were raped or coerced by tourist into the lifestyle seeking to gain visa or better opportunities. This has also contributed to a rise in gay male prostitution in Jamaica and is prevalent amongst teenagers and youth of Jamaica.

Lastly, Sizzla just recovered from a horrific accident where he almost lost his life. Whilst some groups wish he had died, millions of fans around the world sent messages of support, good wishes and prayers for him to make a speedy recovery. This tour partly represent a thanks for their prayers and love that gave him the motivation to get well. Let us be clear, Sizzla has a catalogue of over 67 albums and well over 90% of his music is uplifting, positive, speaks of family, empowerment, love, spirituality, and unity. At the same time he is a Rastafarian musician who embraces his faith and plays a pivotal part in the betterment of his society. What would Bob Marley be today if groups protested against him, keeping him in a box, and preventing him from sharing his music? There are two sides to the story, and yes everyone should be entitled to live and express themselves, but we must be respectful of ALL people's values and principles.

Thank you for taking the time to hear the other side of the story.

sizzla-swedish-concert-cancelled.jpg
Artiste Sizzla Kalonji has had the Swedish leg of his European tour cancelled on account of the anti-gay lyrics which feature in his music. Sizzla was scheduled to perform later this month in Stockholm but public condemnation of the artist, whose lyrics have incited violence against gay people, led organizers to call off the date.

Other concerts in the tour are still planned for Italy, France, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands and Spain. This is not the first time that Organizers have cancelled Sizzla's tour because of anti-gay lyrics. Concerts by Sizzla have been cancelled in the UK in 2004 and in Toronto in 2007.

In 2008, he was denied a visa for the 29 European countries then signed up to the Schengen agreement after a German LGBT group appealed to their government. Sizzla was stopped at Madrid airport that year and returned to the US. In July 2007, Sizzla and numerous other acts signed up to the Reggae Compassionate Act in a deal brokered with top reggae promoters and Stop Murder Music activists.

The Act reads: "It must be clear there's no space in the music community for hatred and prejudice, including no place for racism, violence, sexism or homophobia... we do not encourage nor minister to HATE but rather uphold a philosophy of LOVE, RESPECT and UNDERSTANDING towards all human beings as the cornerstone of reggae."

The European tour dates are believed to be Sizzla's first major appearances since a motorcycle accident late last year led to widespread reports he had died.

Gay tenants anger neighbours

Tenants who reside at an apartment complex in upper St Andrew are hoping to be rescued from the presence of a group of homosexual occupants who they say are menacing.

The frustrated residents said they can no longer live among the six effeminate males who they say reside in an apartment designed to accommodate two persons.

According to the residents, these men are in violation of the rules as there is a clause in the community document titled 'The Rules of the Proprietors' Strata Plan', which states that "...studio apartments are not  to be occupied by more than two persons on a permanent basis'.

Meanwhile, tenants say they want something to be done immediately because they can no longer stomach the distasteful activities of the six. Additionally, reports are that the men walk about throughout the apartment dressed in female underwear having no consideration for others who may find the sight disturbing.

The residents say they have made complaints to the landlandy but nothing has been done so far.

Many Reggae artistes are still in shock over the death of radio DJ Delroy "Speedy" Sterling. Canada-based artistes Iley Dred and Tasha-T lauded Speedy for his dedication to reggae music and his respect for members of tye music fraternity.

Award winning artiste Steele, who is a close friend of Sterling, said he is finding it difficult to come to terms about his death.  He said "Speedy had a good heart and he loved the music. You would not even understand the number of young artistes who Speedy buss here in Canada. I owe a lot to Sterling because he has been playing me on radio for ages. Take an artiste like I-Octane ... is not now Speedy playing I-Octane songs... from him was 'low-Octane'. And there are countless others who Sterling played their music long before they became big name reggae acts. All because he had an ear for talent and wanted to see reggae music grow positively".

In an interview Iley Dred described Speedy as n "all-rounder. He hailed him as someone who was always eager and ready to play a role in furthering the cause of reggae music.

The popular radio personality, emcee and founder of the Canadian Reggae Music Achievement Award, Delroy Sterling, passed away on Sunday at the Etobiocoke General Hospital in Canada. Reports are that Speedy, as he was affectionately called, collapsed at home on Friday and was immediately taken to the hospital, but never recovered from what was said to be complications cause by a brain tumor.

Meanwhile, there will be a memorial celebration in tribute to the life of Delroy 'Speedy' Sterling on Friday, March 23, at Jamaican Canadan center 995 Arrow Road, Toronto, Canada. The thanksgiving service is scheduled for Monday, April 2, 2012.

Condolences to the family and friends of Delroy "Speedy" Sterling from the YardFlex family.

There is an ongoing investigation by the Revenue Protection Division into the illegal sale of imported motor vehicles by the Customs Department. According to reports, a top-ranking police officer implicated in the case is likely to be charged soon.

The Senior Officer has reportedly sought the legal services of a team of attorneys led by Jacqueline Samuels-Brown and Christopher Townsend. The RPD recently seized one of the imported vehicles from the senior cop. Supporters of the senior cop are worried, as they believe his stellar and unblemished record in the Jamaica Constabulary Force could be seriously tarnished, if he's charged. It's understood that investigators from the civilian-led RPD also tried to collect a statement from another "very senior member of the force", who rebuffed their approach.

Sources say other officers in the rank of Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, and Assistant Commissioner are also under investigation by the RPD. Last week, the man at the center of the alleged racket, Omar Guyah, was released on three million dollars bail.

Guyah, the head of the Contraband Enforcement Team and the senior Principal Customs Officer, was arrested two weeks ago, following an investigation into the illegal sale of imported motor vehicles by the Customs Department. Officials of the RPD have disclosed that they have encountered "major resistance" since they commenced the investigation.

Guyah, who is now under house arrest, is to return to court on March 23.

kartel-shaves-his-head.jpgThe drug trial of embattled Jamaican dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel was this morning adjourned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.  The Deejay appeared in court today in a blue pinstripe suit, white shirt, with a pair of black Bank Robber Clarks. One noticeable difference was his hair cut. Kartel had come under fire last year when he started wearing hair extensions.  When the matter was called up, the court was informed that witnesses were not available. The trial was then rescheduled for April 13. Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is facing a charge of illegal possession of marijuana. Kartel has been offered $40,000 bail which he cannot take up because of other criminal charges against him. The police said they held Kartel and others in a hotel room in New Kingston last September. A quantity of marijuana was also reportedly found in the room.

Mavado speaks about his non-show in New Jersey

Webmin

mavado-speaks.jpg

Dancehall superstar Mavado has finally broken his silence on his non-show for a performancein New Jersey on March 10th. According to Mavado, he was looking forward to thrilling his New Jersey fans, where he had not performed for 3 years. The event, Grammy Kid's Anniversary, was well promoted and the buzz around the show was good.  Early  management team have implimented contractual obligations and promoter screening systems to ensure that payment of performance fee is no longer an issue and indeed there was no issue around promoters LKQ Entertainment not paying the Artist fee. Mavado was well rested, focused and looking forward to giving a great show.

Mavado had worked with the promoter on a prior occasion and whilst things were not as smooth as one would have liked, in terms of organisation, the previous event was overall a success and the decision was taken to move ahead with the event in New Jersey. However these organisational issues were once again quickly evident on the night of March 10. The promoter of the event told Mavado's travel party that pickup time was midnight, to arrive at the venue no later than 12.30am, go on stage @ 1am and perform for an hour to comply with opening hours. Daylight saving time was kicking in in the early hours of Sunday morning, which meant the clocks were to go forward at 2am, making it immediately 3am. Mavado readied himself to be picked up at midnight as instructed, only to be told that his management had received a call from LKQ Entertainment that new pick up time was 1am. Wary of the time change and the potential for Mavado's fans to be cheated out of a full performance, Mavado's management were perturbed and as time ticked by as they waited in the hotel lobby sent out this Tweet: "1.40am an we still waitin for promoter to send vehicle to pick us up, so if u in the club in Jersey dnt bex wid the artist for goin on late."

Suspicions quickly became reality as several calls to the promoter resulted in more confusion and what seemed to be pointless lies; "Police moved on the drivers from in front of the hotel," "Police have pulled him over," "They are outside," were just some of the excuses being given by the promoter as to why the vehicles were not at the hotel to pick up the Artist. Mavado, support acts, security, DJ and his management were in the lobby of the hotel for 2 hours waiting and despite being told that the drivers were outside on more than a dozen occasions they were nowhere to be seen.  Calls from people inside Palladium were telling of more disorganisation at the club - no liquor license had been granted for the event so the NJPD informed the promoter he could not sell a drop of alcohol inside the event, much to the chagrin of the partygoers who had come to have a good time.

Finally, as the clock ticked to 3am more calls from patrons inside the club told management that the police were now there and were about to shut it down. Lo and behold the drivers suddenly appeared down the block, having "pulled up outside the wrong hotel." It took them approximately another 10 minutes just to pull round the block by which time the event had been shut down for good. Mavado had no choice but to call it a night.

Mavado is deeply sorry for the hundreds of fans that came out in the cold to support him, paid up to $70 to enter the event, did not get to see him perform and have up to now not been refunded. At this point his management team are considering taking legal action against LKQ Entertainment on a number of grounds and strongly urge anyone with a ticket stub to return to the outlet they purchased it from and demand a full refund.

As for Mavado performing in New Jersey, plans are currently being finalised to stage an event to appease his fans. Details of this will be announced as soon as plans become concrete. We are still baffled as to the reasons why the promoter couldn't get his act together and simply pick up the Artist on time and deliver the advertised package. Mavado regrets the non-performance but he hopes this explanation will help his fans and the patrons that night to understand that it was absolutely due to circumstances beyond his control.

According to reports, the mother of the child, Nadia Darling, left him with the neighbor while she went to the shop to buy meat to prepare dinner. While on her way back home, she was told that there was a house on fire on her street.

michael-misick.jpg
An arrest warrant has been obtained and authorized by Interpol for the arrest of Michael Eugene Misick, former premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to reports, The Special Investigation and Prosecutions Team (SIPT) have sought to secure the attendance of Mr Misick at its offices in Providenciales in respect of allegations of corruption and money laundering during his time in office.

Mr Misick had reportedly been given the opportunity to voluntarily surrender to the SIPT's jurisdiction for interview. Misick's solicitors also stated that he would attend for the interview, but he has failed to do so. Last year a worldwide freeze Misick's assets was ordered by Special Prosecutor Helen Garlick, the Turks and Caiços Sun newspaper reported.

The order included bank accounts held in the Turks and Caiços Islands and overseas, Misick's personal residence in Providenciales, parcels of land throughout the country, two condominiums, a cinema in Providenciales which still carries a variation of his ex-wife Lisa-Raye McCoy's name, and several credit cards.

Misick, who has been at the centre of a corruption probe into the ruling elite on the British dependency, resigned in March 2009, saying he was giving way to a unified Government.

His resignation came as the British government was considering legislation to suspend the constitution and hand over power to the British Governor Gordon Wetherell.

London eventually imposed direct rule on the islands in August 2009, a move that angered Misick who accused the British of organising a coup.

dudus-sentence-postponed.jpgChristopher 'Dudus' Coke, who was slated to be sentenced at 2 p.m. this afternoon in Manhattan federal court had his sentencing put off until May. United States Southern District Court of New York, Judge Robert Patterson said he had received a recommendation from the Prosecution for a 23-year prison sentence.

However, he said he also got a letter from the defense dated March 12, saying the proposed sentence was too harsh. The prosecution could not provide enough evidence to support the recommended sentence and as such the judge postponed the sentencing after an evidentiary hearing scheduled to begin on May 22nd.

Coke was captured in 2010 in Jamaica during a stand-off between his followers and Jamaican soldiers. Some 70 persons died during the show down and Coke was later captured, dressed in a wig and disguised as a woman in a car driven by a Jamaican pastor.

Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina is reportedly engaged to her "brother" Nick Gordon. Although not related by blood, Bobbi Kristina and Nick grew up together after Whitney took him in at the age of 12 when his father went to prison and his mother was unable to take care of him.

Whitney's mother however, is not happy with the relationship. According to Cissy Houston, what her granddaughter and Gordon are doing is incestuous. Cissy also believes Nick is taking advantage of Bobbi and her issues.

It is claimed that Cissy has even requested that the Whitney Houston Estate get involved in an attempt to get him evicted from Whitney's $1.2m Atlanta townhouse, where he is apparently currently living alongside Bobbi.

It was reported yesterday that Bobbi, 19, is secretly engaged to 22-year-old Nick.

Parents are calling for disciplinary action after a female teacher is said to be pregnant for one of her male students at a high school and has reportedly sparked controversy in eastern Jamaica with some parents calling for immediate disciplinary action to be taken.

According to reports, residents of the community in which the school is located have been calling for the school to relieve the teacher of her post since it was recently revealed who is the father of her child, however, there has been no move at the institution to charge the teacher for professional misconduct or to take any other disciplinary action.

The inaction of the school has led parents to carry their complaints to the School Board. It is reported that word of the pregnancy got out after the student father declared that the child was his. The student and the teacher are said to have been friends for a period of time and were spotted in very close intimate positions by other students.

Parents and community members are pleading for the board to take action against both teacher and student so that the tarnished reputation of the school can be repaired.

Organisers of Reggae Sumfest, Jamaica's premier reggae music festival - have announced that this year's event is to be staged from July 15-21 at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay.

Robert Russell, director of Summerfest Productions, which organises the event, says this year they will be pulling out all the stops for the festival, as, in addition to the Jamaica 50 celebrations, Reggae Sumfest is celebrating 20 years.

Over the past 20 years, Reggae Sumfest has been graced by an extensive list of both local and foreign acts. The list of locals includes Damian Marley, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Mavado and Vybz Kartel and International Acts have included Destiny's Child, Lionel Richie and Usher.

Amidst the plans for the Jamaica 50 and Sumfest's 20th edition of the festival, the promoters are making an appeal to the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) - owners and operators of the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex - to make necessary improvements to the venue, which has been home to Reggae Sumfest since its inception.

Two years ago, continuous rainfall and poor drainage, left the venue waterlogged and threatened to disrupt the festival.

Veronica Campbell-Brown defended her world indoor 60 meters title as Jamaica secured its first gold medal on the final day of the World Indoor Championship in Istanbul, Turkey.

Campbell-Brown won in a world leading 7.01 seconds, ahead of Murielle Ahoure of Ivory Coast who came second in 7.04 seconds and American Tiana Madison who ran in 7.09 seconds. Aleen Bailey who also made the final ended seventh in 7.24 seconds.

Campbell-Brown becomes only the second woman in World Indoor Championship history to defend the 60 meters crown. The first was Neli Fiere Cooman of the Netherlands achieved the feat by winning in 1987 and 1989.  Jamaica closed the championship joint eighth with a gold and a silver.

bujus-lawyer.jpg

Buju Banton's lawyer, David Markus has responded to the United States' government's request to have the courts ignore his appeal to have the artiste's guilty verdict overturned.

Last month, Markus had filed an appeal, stating that the state had failed to bring enough evidence to convict Buju Banton, given name Mark Myrie.

The state, through Assistant US Attorney James Preston, had been quick to respond, saying there was more than enough evidence to have convicted Myrie and that the courts should rethink throwing out a gun charge the prosecution had tacked on to the charges during a second trial.

But Markus has responded to the prosecution's cross-appeal, saying the document did not refute their failure to prove Myrie's guilt.

Markus has also restated his claim that Buju was entrapped by a government agent and that the artiste's right to a speedy trial was violated and that the acquittal on the gun charge issue was the correct one.

Kevin Jackson aka Sanchez has not appeared on a Jamaican stage in recent times. The reason, he said, is that he has embarked on a different musical journey. "I'm a full-time producer now".

The singer, who rose to prominence in 1988 with his cover of Jermaine Jackson's 'Lonely Won't Leave Me Alone', said he has also done work with Chiney K Productions. That effort has produced the single Nuh Kotch, with him on vocals.

The singer said he is currently working on two albums. The first, 'Nuh Kotch', has already been completed with five tracks. The second is a gospel set, which is yet to be titled.

Sanchez said he has some upcoming international engagements in Canada, Europe, the United States and the Caribbean.

Today is International Women's Day

today-is-international-women-day.jpg
International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. During the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies.

Women continue to be victims of violence, with rape and domestic violence listed as significant causes of disability and death among women worldwide. In 1975, during International Women's Year, the UN began celebrating March 8 as International Women's Day. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a UN Day for Women's Rights. The day is aimed at helping nations worldwide to eliminate discrimination against women. It also focuses on helping women gain full and equal participation in global development.

Prominent Deejay Adidjah "Vybz Kartel" has written a letter from behind bars. The prominent deejay, who faces murder, drug and obstruction of justice charges stemming from three separate cases, issued a letter from the Horizon Remand Centre in Spanish Town, where he currently resides while awaiting trial. A part of his letter was published in the Sunday Gleaner by University of the West Indies Literary and Cultural professor, Carolyn Cooper who wrote an editorial piece on Kartel's current situation behind bars.

In the letter, Kartel accuses law enforcement officials and the media of labeling him guilty before getting the chance to prove his innocence before the courts.

"As you know I am in jail on numerous charges and I'd like to tell you that I am an innocent man who needs your help because I'm being painted as this evil 'D.J. by day, don by night' murderer who is society's number one cause of crime and violence. The police is using the media to slaughter me and as such I don't think I will get a fair trial. They are using the media to form public opinion of me that is so contradictory to the person that I really am. They (police) have tried my case in the public & found me guilty," the letter reads.

"Every single piece of alleged evidence, every new development in the case is thrown on TV. As if this is a soap opera, but I can assure you that this is no movie to me. This is about my life and my freedom and I take them very seriously."

"My charges are merely allegations, but they are giving the public the impression that I am guilty and that is not fair to me or my family," he said.

"I have been to court on numerous occasions and saw hundreds of accused men who are charged with heinous crimes like murdering children, killing police officers, burning & shooting whole families and I have never once saw police on TV; discussing the development of those cases, much less every week, as in my case."

Vybz Kartel remains in jail despite having copped bail on a marijuana possession charge. He still remains in police custody regarding murder and obstruction of justice related charges in relation to the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says all is in place for today's nomination of candidates for the March 26 local government election. Both parties are expected to nominate candidates for all 228 divisions in the 63 constituencies.

Jamaicans last elected their local parish representatives on December 5, 2007, three months after the JLP had won the general elections after more than 18 years in Opposition. The JLP took home 133 divisions to the 94 won by the PNP.

In the meantime, the EOJ said the November 30, 2011 voters' list that was used in the December 29, 2011 poll, will be used on March 26. The list has a total of 1,648,036 voters.

It is not clear just how much the local government poll is expected to cost the country despite an announcement last week that $900 million would have been budgeted. The figure however had not yet been finalized.

Rat infestation close Calabar High School

rat-infestation.jpg
A pack of rats has swarmed the Calabar High School forcing a temporary suspension of classes at the all-boys institution.

Principal Major Lincolm Thaxter, explained that the school had always struggled with a rat problem, but that the problem has worsened over the past few days. Thaxter revealed. "They (rats) were in the trees they were in the staffroom, the drawers and, of course, there's always that threat of leptospirosis."

Parents were informed via letters, email and text messages that the school would be closed from Wednesday to Friday "due to ongoing maintenance".It did not specify the rodent situation but Thaxter said the school community was informed verbally.

Thaxter said there were no reports of any boys getting sick and that the exterminators were currently doing a full inspection of the school grounds at night, identifying nest areas and setting bait for the rodents.

The principal said that during the inspection, the largest nesting ground was found in an old at swimming pool the back of the institution. He assured parents that garbage was collected daily, so the rat infestation was not an indication of an unclean environment."The pest-control people have assured us that this is adequate time to deal with the problem."

Thaxter estimated that clearing up the rat problem could cost upwards of $100,000, but said he felt confident the school's parent-teacher association and the old boys' network would offer any assistance required."We regret that we had to take this decision but the safety of the students, teachers and the workers came first," he said.

He aims to follow up his success with recent songs such as Apple My Baby for Seanizzle Records.

sizzla-kalonji.jpg

Mavado speaks about his non-show in New Jersey

mavado-speaks.jpg

Mavado regrets the non-performance but he hopes this explanation will help his fans and the patrons that night to understand that it was absolutely due to circumstances beyond his control.

michael-misick.jpg

Kartel pens letter from behind bars

If ever apart
All I want you to know
Is your love is life changing
And I couldn't be the same without you darling
Your love is life saving
You always catch me when I fall

When the tour bus drop off and all light lock off

Promoter belly full and all the fans gone home
I am glad that you are more than a friend

Well the last man you deh wid make a big mistake, left and gone fi good and miss out something weh great

Mavado speaks about his non-show in New Jersey

mavado-speaks.jpg

Mavado regrets the non-performance but he hopes this explanation will help his fans and the patrons that night to understand that it was absolutely due to circumstances beyond his control.

michael-misick.jpg

Kartel pens letter from behind bars

Ooh Yea
Ooh Yea

Would you believe me if I told you
will you believe me when I say

Affairs of the heart
Together we've grown
If ever apart
All I want you to know
Is your love is life changing
And I couldn't be the same without you darling
Your love is life saving
You always catch me when I fall

When the tour bus drop off and all light lock off
I'm a mere mortal again
Promoter belly full and all the fans gone home
I am glad that you are more than a friend
Woman your love changing
And I couldn't be the same without you darling
Your love is life saving
You always catch me when I fall

Its People just like you and you will pass them in the traffic,
That never fall in love and so me haffi say me lucky
Nuff of them nah fortunate enough to have somebody
some just cannot see beyond the flesh and it's so funny
Never get too caught up in yourself to feel the magic
True love come and pass you by your life that is so tragic
Oportunity yuh s'posed to take it while you have it, no wait till you a panic

Well the last man you deh wid make a big mistake, left and gone fi good and miss out something weh great
Loyal and full of faith when enough of them a move fake

When I'm away is like my songs are waste cause you are not near to hear me

And woman I can see things clearly
