Blake stated that the Gibson Relays last week held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, were a great start for his 2012 season. "I am already looking forward to that fast track in New York City on June 9th", Blake said

Hours after collecting an award on behalf of his father's band, the legendary Skatalites, Okeene Brevett was shot dead in his home community of Seaview Gardens early Sunday morning. Brevett had attended the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) Awards at Emancipation Park Saturday night on behalf of his father Lloyd Brevett, who is too old and frail.

Brevett was presented with the JaRIA Band award by former Skatalites manager and ex-Prime Minister P J Patterson. According to reports, Brevett was walking in the community, close to his home, when he was pounced upon by armed thugs who shot him. He died on the spot.

A JaRIA official said he was told that Okeene had taken the award home, showed it to his father and other people in the community, then left his home to celebrate when the tragedy occurred.

Lloyd Brevett is a co-founder and former upright bass player of The Skatalites. The group, which was formed in 1964 with some of Jamaica's top musicians at the time, has recorded over 20 albums and toured the world extensively. Of the nine original members of the group, only Lloyd Brevett and Lester Sterling are still alive.

Cornell Francis, 28, of a Westmoreland address was fined $70,000 or nine months imprisonment for larceny of a goat.

Barrington Holmes, a farmer, and owner of the goat, testified that on October 20, last year, he received information which led him to go on a search for his 33 goats.Holmes stated that he saw his black goat in the trunk of a motor car and identified the goat by its broken horn.He said the goat was involved in a fight two months before he was stolen, and that was how his horn was broken.

Holmes said residents had stopped Francis when they saw the goat in the trunk of the motor car. When the police arrived on the scene, the accused had injuries all over his body.Francis denied, stealing the goat.He told the court that he had gone to the river to wash his motor car.

After Francis was found guilty, attorney-at-Law Michael Erskine begged Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes not to send him to prison.Erskine said Francis had no previous conviction and had already been punished by the mob who attacked and injured him.

RM Barnes said although she abhorred stealing, especially from hard working farmers, she would exercise some leniency and impose a fine.

Farmer Holmes informed the court that the goat was consumed over the Christmas holidays last year.

A young man believed to be in his early twenties, was stabbed at the close of Carnival Tuesday's Parade of Bands at Queens Park Savannah.

The victim was seen staggering across the stage bleeding from a wound to his neck and a blow to his head. He was taken to the ICU at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

According to hospital sources, he was treated and stabilized at the ICU where he was kept overnight. The name of the victim was not released.

Reports are that violence marred the last lap celebrations of the Dream Team band due to inadequate police and army personnel at the Savannah edge at Queen's Park East. According to the police however, the bands were supplied one security guard per ten masqueraders, but many young, intoxicated male bystanders infiltrated the band attracted by the young women revelers.

Executive Committee members of the band stated that they will now be rethinking the presentation of the band and may even be downsizing the band for 2013.

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has issued a statement has reported that "Livity" Coke, the brother of confessed crime boss Christopher "Dudus" Coke was beaten by soldiers at the Remand Centre.

The JDF said Coke was among several inmates at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre who reportedly engaged in the throwing of water, food and faeces from their cell because they were being held under special conditions at the facility.

According to reports, a decision was taken to temporarily move the inmates from their cells in order to clean up the area. The force said some inmates protested that the movement was taking place during time normally reserved for recreational activities. A few inmates attempted to incite a larger demonstration by shouting to other inmates that any attempts to move them would be met with resistance.

The JDF further reported that when it was time to move Coke, he resisted and attempted to walk back to his original cell. "...Coke punched a JDF sergeant and a lance corporal in their faces, and wrested a baton from another. He then continued his violent resistance by wielding the baton at the soldiers. With the increased level of violence, soldiers themselves had to use batons to eventually restrain him," the release said.

After Coke was restrained, it was observed that he was bleeding. He was taken to the University of the West Indies hospital for precautionary x-rays where doctors determined that his injuries were sufficiently minor for him to return to the HARC.

The matter has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations.

Chris Brown has been accused of stealing a woman's iPhone in Miami after she tried to take pictures of the R&B singer.

According to reports, Brown stole Christal Spann's phone outside a nightclub in Miami. Spann stated that she had followed Chris Brown and Tyga out of the Cameo nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning and took a picture of Brown as he got into his Bentley.

Brown reportedly flipped out when he saw her camera phone-- then grabbed it through the car window, saying, "B***h, you ain't going to put that on no website."

The police report states that the 22-year old star then rolled up his car window and drove off with Spann's $500 phone.

The young woman has since filed a report against Brown stating "robbery by snatching" as the reason for her complaint.

The representative added that no arrests have been made and no warrant has been issued yet, with the incident said to currently be under investigation. Chris is still on probation for his 2009 assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna, meaning if he is arrested he could face time in prison for violating terms of his probation.

According to reports, some individuals are upset that Machel Montano has walked away with the Soca Monarch title. Many believe that other artistes enter every year but are always denied victory simply because Machel is in the competition.

Some Antiguans & Barbudans have expressed displeasure with local artiste Hard Knaxx's loss at the International Soca Monarch Competition in Trinidad on Friday. Many individuals have been calling in to radio stations expressing their displeasure at this. One caller said: "I think we waste time sending artistes down there to perform. It doesn't make any sense... In a million years they are not going to win anything."

Hard Knaxx himself was also dissatisfied with the show. He conveyed that aspects such as fireworks, confetti and stage lighting were not delivered during his performance. "I see that as not being professional enough at the night of the show, by paying for everything and not getting nothing ... It's like a bias thing," Hard Knaxx said.

The artiste also claims that although the music was fine in rehearsals it was lacking on the night of the show. However, Hard Knaxx said he does not dwell on the innuendos and remains in high spirits. He is calling the show a "win-win" situation.

"It's a big thing, it's a big achievement, even though I didn't win. Everyone is still a winner," Knaxx said.

A massive allergic reaction to hair glue may have caused the death of Jamaican-born woman in London.

During a hearing at the Coroner's Court 2 weeks ago, pathologist Dr Michael Heath explained that 34 year old Atasha Graham may have died from the latex glue used to apply her extensions.

It is being reported that last year, Graham had been dancing at a club and was fine until she stepped through the doorway of her home in Southeast London, at 6.30 a.m., then suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing.

A post-mortem failed to find any abnormalities with her organs or substances which could have caused her death.  The pathologist also told the hearing that traces of glue or solvent could have seeped into her bloodstream hours later, after she started perspiring on the dance floor.

Graham had been reportedly using hair extensions for 14 years.

A male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose.

A young student nurse appears to give him a partial sponge bath.

"Nurse", he mumbles, from behind the mask. "Are my testicles black?"

Embarrassed, the young nurse replies,"I don't know, Sir I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet." He struggles to ask again, "Nurse, please check. Are my testicles black?"

Concerned that he may elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles in the other.

Then, she takes a close look and says, "there's nothing wrong with them, Sir!"

The man pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her and says very slowly, "Thank you very much. That was wonderful, but listen very, very closely......Are - my - t e s t - r e s u l t s - b a c k?"

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is the most significant event on the islands' cultural and tourism calendar, with numerous cultural events leading up to the street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It is said that if the islanders are not celebrating it, then they are preparing for it, while reminiscing about the past year's festival. The heart of the musical celebration has been calypso. In recently times, soca has replaced calypso as the most celebrated type of music. Costumes, stick fighting and limbo competitions are also important components of the festival.

Spain and England at different times both claimed Trinidad as their colonies. Under British rule, the French settled in Trinidad, bringing with them their slaves, customs, and culture. By 1797, 14,000 French settlers came to live in Trinidad, consisting of about 2,000 whites and 12,000 slaves. Most of the native peoples (often called the Amerindians) who were the first people to live in Trinidad, died from forced labour and illness.

Carnival was introduced to Trinidad around 1785, as the French settlers began to arrive. The tradition caught on quickly, and fancy balls were held where the wealthy planters put on masks, wigs, and beautiful dresses and danced long into the night. The use of masks had special meaning for the slaves, because for many African peoples, masking is widely used in their rituals for the dead. Obviously banned from the masked balls of the French, the slaves would hold their own little carnivals in their backyards -- using their own rituals and folklore, but also imitating their masters' behaviour at the masked balls.

For African people, carnival became a way to express their power as individuals, as well as their rich cultural traditions. After 1838 (when slavery was abolished), the freed Africans began to host their own carnival celebrations in the streets that grew more and more elaborate, and soon became more popular than the balls.

Today, carnival in Trinidad is like a mirror that reflects the faces the many immigrants who have come to this island nation from Europe, Africa, India, and China. African, Asian, and American Indian influences have been particularly strong.

Carnival arts offers a dynamic tool for self-expression and exploration, a tool to seek out our roots, a tool to develop new forms of looking at the world and its cultures, and finally, a tool to unite the world, to discover what we all have in common, and to celebrate what makes us different.

Capacity building, best-practice sharing and job creating opportunities are addressed with CARICOM leaders during two-day mission to Haiti

In meeting with the President of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mr. Desire Delano Bouterse and the Bureau of Heads of Government during CARICOM's two-day mission to Haiti, Haiti's Minister of the Interior, Thierry Mayard-Paul stressed that Haiti is charting a new course for sustainable economic development.

"We are focusing our efforts on investment and job creation, particularly in Haiti's heartland," he said, articulating the Martelly administration's new vision for Haiti. "We understand that the key to driving sustainable development in Haiti is to map it throughout our entire nation and then drive it through local initiatives and decentralized cooperation."

CARICOM leaders are in Haiti to forge stronger ties and closer cooperation between the 14 member states while exploring ways to strengthen Haiti's participation in the organization. Under discussion is the adoption of French as an official and working language for the organization.

After thanking CARICOM members for their ongoing support of Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, Mayard-Paul emphasized that his nation is progressing in its recovery efforts, saying, "President Martelly's new vision for Haiti is to build a socially just, economically free, and politically independent nation that does not end with reconstruction but rather, begins with renovation. This is aligned with the administration's vision for decentralization and job creation through investment."

Stressing the fact that Haiti offers an energetic and willing workforce, Mayard-Paul said, "It is clear that what Haitians want and need is jobs that will restore their dignity. We are therefore looking forward to working in close collaboration with our CARICOM neighbors to promote opportunities that reflect our communities' most pressing priorities - jobs. We also seek to share those best practices that are yielding results for other member nations."

The Minister pointed to collaboration in Civil Protection activities, such as disaster preparedness and relief. "All of our nations are in geographic locations that make us vulnerable to the variances of nature," he said. "Therefore, we welcome best-practice sharing focused on institutional capacity building for preparedness and response, and equipment that will allow us to react more quickly and effectively."

In encouraging investments from CARICOM nations, the Minister highlighted the myriad of investment opportunities waiting in Haiti's heartland, especially in social infrastructure initiatives that enable communities to generate jobs and sustainable development. "With so many great opportunities in agriculture, tourism, infrastructure development and other sectors, we would be looking to CARICOM to help steer investments and contributions in these areas," he said.

"Additionally, as part of CSME [Single Market Economy of the Caribbean], we should be looking at standards that will facilitate the export of Haitian products to our Caribbean neighbors."

The Haitian minister asked for closer collaboration on cultural exchange activities and cited the possibility of establishing a Caribbean Youth Parliament or Organization that seeks to build lasting relationships among the future leaders of the Caribbean. "Caribbean universities could also embark on region-wide research related to the environment, the economy and social integration. The idea is that future leaders have a common understanding and culture that will facilitate a common market," he said.

Overall, the Ministry of the Interior identified 40 key projects pertaining to meeting the needs of Haiti's population outside the capital of Port-au-Prince, telling CARICOM representatives, "We would welcome the opportunity to present and discuss them with you. Our brother nations of CARICOM have been of great support to us since the earthquake and we are grateful".

London's Kiss FM radio host David Rodigan was presented with UK's fifth highest award, the prestigious Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). The award was presented to him by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

Rodigan stated that: "One of the reasons I feel so honored to be awarded for services to broadcasting is because it is so important for reggae music and, without being patronizing, for the Jamaican people who migrated to this country in the 50s and 60s and brought their music with them."

Rodigan began his broadcasting career in 1978 on BBC Radio London. He moved to Capital Radio in 1979, where he remained for 11 years, hosting his legendary Roots Rockers program, cassettes of which were prized commodities among reggae fans. He further solidified his reggae street-cred when he began broadcasting his Capital Radio show live from Jamaica. He engaged in a series of on-air competitions with renowned presenter Barry "Barry G" Gordon of (Jamaica's now defunct) JBC radio, their lively exchanges garnering a widespread audience that included Jamaicans on the island and those living in England and throughout North America.

Rodigan's illustrious career as a radio host and sound system selector spans 35 years. Rodigan can be heard on Sunday night 11pm-1:00am on London's Kiss FM and in the USA on WVIP 93.5FM on Irie Jam Radio on the popular "London Calling" which airs each Saturday.

Slanger debuts second mixtape: "Good Ova Evil"

Ronae Burgess aka Slanger was born on June 8th on the island of Bermuda. He was introduced to reggae music at an early age by his father and uncle's who played the latest Jamaican music on a daily basis. His exposure to the latest drops and dubs contributed to his brash attitude when clashing his classmates at school. His eagerness to immerse himself into the reggae culture prompted him to sneak out to attend dances.

It was not until 1986, when he heard the song "When a Man's in Love" by Yami Bolo that Slanger's interest in becoming an artist peaked. The pivotal motivator however, came from Reggae Grammy winner Shabba Ranks. Slanger became mesmerized and pre-occupied with every Shabba song, interview and live performance.

As his interest in music grew, he began visiting studios in Kingston, Jamaica to voice dub plates by various artistes for local sound system OGS Genesis. It was during one of these dub sessions where he met the late deejay Panhead, who took an interest in Slanger's talent and taught him about the music business.

As Slanger began to launch himself as a legitimate artist, in 1994, at the age of 19, Slanger was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.  During his incarceration he began to examine and write about his life, experiences, thoughts, and feelings. During this period he began to re-shape his life. It was also during his incarceration that he also met Jah Cure.

In 2007, he began recording from behind bars and released his smash single, "Stay Focused" on the Dark Cloud riddim.  He released other notable songs including "How Can I Forget," "Blessed Today Ft. Sweet Sess," "False High", and his award winning "World Gone Mad" collaboration with Big Ship Recording Artist Bramma, which received an award for Best Reggae Song in 2010.

After serving fifteen and a half years in prison, Slanger was released in October 2009. Since then he has been an opening act for:  Ras Shiloh, Gyptian, and Mr. Easy.  In January of this year, Slanger released his second mixtape titled "Good Over Evil". Slanger has also been featured on a compilation album featuring various artists from France and Jamaica.  This project can be found on ITunes and YouTube entitled "Royal Flush Riddim!"

Having endured much during his incarceration, Slanger has moved forward with his life and music. With Slanger's musical abilities showcasing his unique voice, exceptional writing skills , natural stage charisma and his unforgettable trademarks Hmph! Mm Hmm!,  buzzing fans continue to be intrigued by his provocative lyrics that enlighten and cry out for a call to action.

Benjamin Banneker: Invented America's First Clock

benjamin-banneker.jpg
In the Stevie Wonder song "Black Man," the Motown marvel sings of Benjamin Banneker: "first clock to be made in America was created by a black man." The song touches on the genius of Benjamin Banneker and the many hats he wore - as a farmer, mathematician, astronomer, author and land surveyor.

Benjamin Banneker was the son of former slaves and was primarily self-taught. He received his early education from a Quaker school. He worked on his family's tobacco farm and at the age of 15 he took over the farm and invented an irrigation system to control the flow of water to the crops from nearby springs. As a result of his innovation, the farm flourished, even during droughts.

However, it was his clock invention that really propelled his reputation. Sometime in the early 1750s, Benjamin borrowed a pocket watch from a wealthy acquaintance, took the watch apart and studied its components. After returning the watch, he created a fully functioning clock entirely out of carved wooden pieces. The clock was amazingly precise, and would keep on ticking for decades. As the result of the attention his self-made clock received, Banneker was able to start up his own watch and clock repair business.

Banneker's accomplishments didn't end there.  He borrowed books on astronomy and mathematics from a friend and engorged himself in the subjects. Putting his newfound knowledge to use, Banneker accurately predicted a 1789 solar eclipse. In the early 1790s, Banneker added another job title to his resume - author. Wielding knowledge like a sword, Benjamin Banneker was many things - inventor, scientist, anti-slavery proponent - and, as a result, his legacy lives on to this day.

Ryno released a counteraction to Popcaan's "Box Pon Jaw" titled "Gaza Beating Stick".  He says that based on the fact that Popcaan has not answered him in a song or in an interview, he believes that Popcaan is scared of him.

Ryno says he is focused on putting out music and setting his foundation because since leaving the Portmore Empire, things have slowed down for him a bit.

A boy and his father from rural Jamaica were visting America for the first time.

The first time they went to a mall, they were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again.

The boy asked, "Ah whaddat, daddy?"

The father (having never seen an elevator) responded, "Son, mi nevah see nuting so inna my life! Mi nuh know what it is!"

While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheelchair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, sexy 19-year-old woman stepped out.

The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, says quietly to his son, "Bwoy... Go get yuh Madda!"

The US Government says there is plenty of evidence to support the federal jury's conviction of Reggae artiste Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton on cocaine conspiracy and trafficking charges.

Banton's attorney, David Markus, stated that a government informant relentlessly pursued his client which resulted in improper entrapment.

Prosecutors have responded and stated that Banton's words and actions in recorded conversations and videotaped meetings revealed that the singer "eagerly brokered" a drug deal between undercover government agents and a friend.

They also asked the appeals court to reverse a judge's decision to toss a related gun charge.

Banton is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."

Whitney is known for hits such as "Saving all my love for you", "The Greatest Love of All" and "Where do broken hearts go". Houston was set to appear in this year's "Sparkle," a remake of the 1976 hit, which was loosely based on the story of The Supremes. It was her first movie role since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife."

Whitney leaves behind her daughter Bobbi Kristina from her tumultuous marriage with Bobby Brown. Houston was 48 years old.

According to reports, Beyonce and Jay Z will be trade marking their one month old baby girl's name 'Blue Ivy'.

The couple have filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office to protect Blue Ivy's name against others using it.

The application was filed under Beyonce's BGK trademark Holdings, and is still pending.

If approved, Beyoncé, 30, and Jay-Z, 42, could use their daughter's name for brand or endorsements. It is also likely they took action in order to prevent others cashing in on their already famous offspring.

The Patent Office has already denied two attempts by other parties to trademark the name since Blue Ivy was born on January 7th. The reason for the rejection: the name belongs to a 'very famous infant'.

jamms-copyright-rules.jpg
The Jamaica Music Society (JAMMS) is now campaigning to enforce copyright rules for promoters who play music at their event. General Manager of JAMMS, Evon Mullings, stated that the rules have been I effect since 1993. JAMMS was established under the Copyright Act of Jamaica to administer the intellectual property rights granted to producers/companies who are owners of the copyright in sound recordings.

Mullings further revealed that since the music business has taken a sour turn as it relates to sales, it is important that music industry players are protected from exploitation. JAMMS will therefore act as a mediator to ensure that composers are compensated for their investments. If a JAMMS license is not obtained prior to an event where music is being played, it may constitute an infringement of copyright.

According to Mullings, "Event promoters must indicate the size of the event by declaring to JAMMS the estimated number of patrons. Based on the size of the event, promoters will pay the applicable license fee, JAMMS will then issue payment receipts along with the copyright permit for public performance of sound recordings'.

Mullings stated that this is to build a good relationship with promoters and industry players, but also warned that copyright infringement is an illegal offence which carries penalties under the law.

According to a police source, Stacy-Ann's death was as a result of an argument about keeping the bathroom clean.

Susan Smith has since been taken into custody for questioning for the death of her sister. Superintendent Clive Bair stated that based on the level of investigations being carried out, it appeared that more than one person was involved in this crime. He made an appeal to members of the public who may have any information regarding the crime to come forward.

Bob Marley was born on Feb 6th, 1945, in St. Ann. His mom at the time was an 18 year old Jamaican native, and his dad was a 50 year old white navel captain. The couple got married in 1944 a year before Bob was born. In 1950 Marley moved to Trench Town - Kingston. After Marley dropped out of school he became interested in music. In early 1962 Bob Marley, Bunny Livingston, Peter McIntosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso and Cherry Smith formed a ska & rocksteady group called "The Teenager" which later became The Wailing Rudeboys it was changed again to The Wailing Wailers and eventually became The Wailers .

Bob Marley has been a great influence in the lives of many present day musical artists and other performers. He grew up listening to the legendary Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield, the Drifters and Louis Jordan.

Bob Marley would put his first record out on wax in February of 1962, the song was called "Judge not." When it came out it was an instant hit locally, but his international fame would not spread for a couple of years.

In 1969, the Wailers first tape was recorded, they were sent to England and released on Trojan records, it was Bob Marley and the Wailers first album and was titled 'Soul Rebels'. This album was only released in Jamaica and England and sold well. titled 'Exodus'

In 1976 'Rastaman Vibrations' was released and the album made its way on to  the American charts.  In December of 1976, an Assassination attempt took place at his house and Marley was shot. Another album was released and stayed on the European charts for 56 weeks.

In May of 1977 during the Exodus tour he was playing football and injured his toe. The injury never healed, and he never got it treated and continued on his tour.

Marley's last concert would be in Pittsburgh on Sept. 23, 1980 at the Stanley Theater. He would undergo many different treatments to keep him alive longer, but on May 11th, 1981, Bob Marley died at the age of 36 from cancer.

Although Bob has been dead for years, his music lives on through his sons: Stephen, Ziggy, Julian and Kymani.  Bob Marley not only was one of the greatest musicians in the history of music, he is also one of the greatest men in the history of the world, through his music he not only touched the lives of his fellow countrymen and he has influenced the lifestyles, attitudes and feelings of people all over the world.

Samuel Sharp or Daddy Sharpe as he was affectionately called, saw the injustices of slavery and was appalled by it. Born in 1780, Sam Sharpe was the slave of an English lawyer.

Sharpe is considered one of the forerunners to the labour movement as he fought for the rights of fellow workers. He devised a plan of passive resistance in order to force the hands of the planters. Sharpe and his congregation decided that as of Christmas day, 1831, they would cease to work as slaves.

The Christmas Rebellion, as it was known as, started in St James and spread across the entire island. Estate Great Houses were burnt, crops destroyed and a number of whites were killed. The retribution that followed, was swift, up to 500 slaves were executed after trial. Sam Sharpe named as the instigator, was eventually captured and hung at the Parade in Montego Bay, now renamed Sam Sharpe Square.

The Christmas Rebellion of 1831, was a key event in the fight for the abolishment of slavery.  On August 1, 1938 the Apprenticeship System ended.  Full freedom was granted to the slaves.

Sam Sharpe was declared a National Hero in 1975. He appears on the $50 note.

nanny-of-the-maroons.jpg
Nanny, also called Nanny of the Maroons and Queen Nanny, was a leader of the Maroons in Jamaica. The Maroons were considered defiant Jamaican slaves who fled from the oppressive plantations and formed their own community in the hills. Nanny and her brothers: Accompong, Cudjoe, Johhny and Quao ran away from their plantation and lived in the Blue Mountain areas.

By 1720, Nanny and Quao had settled and controlled an area in the Blue Mountains. As a revolt leader, Nanny aided in the defeat of the British army in several battles. Nanny organized plans to free slaves and was very successful in doing this. Over a 5o year span, Nanny has been credited with freeing over 800 slaves. She also kept the slaves healthy due to her vast knowledge of herbs and her role as a spiritual leader.

The community in which Nanny settled was given the name Nanny Town and consisted of 500 acres of land granted to the runaway slaves. Nanny is one of the earliest leaders of slave resistance and one of the very few women.

The government of Jamaica declared Nanny a National Heroine in 1976. Her portrait graces the $500 Jamaican dollar bill.

Popcaan dispels Rumours about threats

Dancehall's rising sensation Popcaan is dispelling rumours that he received threats from party promoters on the island of Trinidad when he went there for a concert over the weekend!

According to the promoter who had booked Popcaan for the show, he had placed the artiste in a hotel far away to remove him from harm's way because other promoters were complaining that they had booked Popcaan for shows and he did not show up. Popcaan however, stated that he was unaware of this.

A popular media house heard reports of Popcaan being threatened and called his mother for a comment. Being a concerned mother, she expressed concern for her son's safety.

Popcaan was in Trinidad for a concert alongside soca artiste Shurwayne Winchester. The DJ has done a few soca collabs in order to tap into that market and show his versatility.

Popcaan's booking agency understands that there is some discrepancy about deposits made on shows and are trying to see if there are actual receipts. If promoters can verify with signed contracts and deposits that they indeed booked the artiste, he will honour those contracts. Persons wishing to book Popcaan should contact: bookings.popcaan@gmail.com and 8763523777.

dennis-brown-small.jpg
The legendary singer with the unforgettable voice would have celebrated his 55th birthday today.

Born in Kingston, Dennis began performing at the age of nine and caught the attention of producer Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, who operated Studio One.  He made his first hit record "No Man Is An Island" at age 11.

His career spanned more than 30 years in which Brown thrilled audiences with uplifting lyrics and songs and much more. Brown promoted peace with hits such as 'Here I Come' and 'Stop the Fussing and Fighting'.  He made ladies swoon in love with songs like 'If I had the world' and 'Should I'.

After the death of Bob Marley's in 1981, Dennis reigned supreme.

On July 1, 1999, the music world experienced a loss when the golden voice was silenced.  Dennis, who had reportedly been ailing for several weeks died from cardiac arrest at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica.

The news of his death unleashed a flood of tributes the likes of which had not been seen in Jamaica since the passing of Bob Marley almost 20 years prior.

Brown's funeral was held at the National Arena with both the then Prime Minister PJ Patterson and Opposition Leader Edward Seaga paying tribute during the service.  His body was laid to rest in the National Hero's Park.

Dennis Emmanuel Brown- gone but not forgotten.

Executive Committee members of the band stated that they will now be rethinking the presentation of the band and may even be downsizing the band for 2013.

leighton-livity-coke-injured-during-violent-resistance.jpg

A 73 year old deacon was charged with breaches of the Child Care and Protection Act after he was accused of having sex with an 11 year old girl at the church.

According to reports, the complainant was at the church in December when she went to the rear of the premises and was fondled by the high-ranking church member. He then offered her sweets and $50 to keep it a secret. The child, however, reported the matter to her family and a subsequent report was made to the police.

Upcoming Gospel artiste Kereen Gregory aka KG, is anticipating the opportunity to perform alongside Carlene Davis.  Both artistes are among a set of gospel acts slated to perform at a concert entitled 'Ash Wednesday Praise' on February 22nd in Kitson Town, St Catherine.

KG says Carlene Davis is one of her favorite female gospel singers and also stated that she has been an inspiration to her. "Minister Carlene Davis' story is such a wonderful one; how she moved from secular to gospel with such grace and I am particularly impressed with how Sister Carlene handled the testing of her faith in God when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has always been one of my heroes and it is a joy to share stage with such a powerful woman of God."
KG has been quite visible since the start of the year, doing radio, television and print interviews, and winning over fans as she prepares for the release of her debut album. The album is set to hit the stores by Easter and, as a result the singer has been in the studio working closely with producers to put on the all-important final touches.

History of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival

Webmin
No Comments
trinidad-and-tobago-carnival-history.jpg
The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is an annual event celebrated on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Yaaaaoooooowwwww, a wha really a gwaan between Popcaan and Ryno? Ryno says that Popcaan has copied his style, flow and image. Ryno says he is not looking for a lyrical feud but that everybody can see that Popcaan has copied him from the plaits to the dress code. Ryno say him a di original and Popcaan is a knockoff.

It look like the lyrical war out fi start up again.

Yard Joke Of The Day: Go Get Yuh Madda

Executive Committee members of the band stated that they will now be rethinking the presentation of the band and may even be downsizing the band for 2013.

leighton-livity-coke-injured-during-violent-resistance.jpg

History of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival

trinidad-and-tobago-carnival-history.jpg
The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is an annual event celebrated on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Webmin

benjamin-banneker.jpg

Singer and actress Whitney Houston had died. She reigned supreme as pop music's Queen until her voice and image were ravaged by drug use.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown. Whitney was one of the world's best selling artistes in the 1980's onward.
