Usain Bolt, the world 100 and 200 metre record holder, has admitted to feeling
some nerves ahead of his season debut at Wednesday's Rome Diamond League meet in
Bolt will be contesting his first race since his two year unbeaten streak was
ended by American rival Tyson Gay last August.
"The Diamond League is not my main focus right now. We're going to take the
Diamond League as a stepping stone leading to the World (Athletic) Championship
to determine how good my slot is and what I need to adjust. If me and Tyson meet
before the World Championship that will be good because I can determine what I
need to do (and) what I don't need to do, so these are the things that we want
to (use) the Diamond League (for), to see where I'm at in my training and what I
need to improve," Bolt said.
The sprint sensation will go up against fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell in Rome on
But, Bolt, who suffered from back and achilles' tendon problems last season,
said he stopped in Munich to check with his doctor to make sure everything was
ok and was given the go ahead to compete.
"This season now, I'm ready, I'm just working hard trying to get into shape and
as along as I'm in shape, I have no worries," he said.
