Bolt named Commonwealth male athlete

Jamaica's track and field super star Usain Bolt and veteran sports journalist Tony Becca picked up top awards at the prestigious 29th Annual Commonwealth Sports Awards held at in Birmingham, England Saturday night.

Bolt was awarded the Outstanding Male Athlete award while Britain's heptathlete Jessica Ennis collected the Outstanding Female Athlete award.

Mike Fennell, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, praised both athletes although neither competed at last month's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

Australia's men's hockey team, who won gold at the 19th Commonwealth Games in India, was named Team of the Year.

There was also the inauguration of the top journalist award which saw Becca of The Gleaner newspaper sharing the most Outstanding Sports Writer prize with Nick Pitt, Sunday Times journalist of England.

Squash icon Susie Simcock of New Zealand picked up the prestigious lifetime achievement award ahead of Jamaica's netball legend Molly Rhone, President of the international Federation of Netball Associations.
