MUSIC REVIEW: Lady Saw Walk Out CD

lady-saw-walk-out-beyonce-no-doubt-sexygirls-ne-yo-rihanna-jay-z.jpgLady Saw, Walk Out (VP): American pop music audiences may mainly know Lady Saw from her cameo on No Doubt's Grammy-winning 2003 single, Underneath It All. But the reggae vocalist has more than a decade of music under her belt, or shall we say under her skirt? Respected as dancehall's first lady in Jamaica, Lady Saw's post-feminist, sex-obsessed lyrics often extol the power of women's sex organs.

On her eighth solo disc, Walk Out, she makes pains to balance the raunchiness with street anthems and some self-help sentimentalism. Me and My Crew (The Rae) is a flag-waving party song, punctuated by sharp turntable scratches. Meanwhile, the electro-riddim of Power of the Pum is all dark seduction, with Lady Saw bragging about her nookie: "Gotta lotta men losing their senses/ just to get close and be friends/ me have big men jumping wire fences."

wailing-souls-reggae-bob-marley.jpgThe legendary Wailing Souls' were there from Reggae's beginnings in the late 60s and early 70s. They grew up and sang in the same Trench Town yards in Kingston, Jamaica as Bob Marley, Joe Higgs, and other reggae icons. The veteran multi-Grammy® nominated roots reggae group's longevity has come due their adaptability to trends in the music without the compromise of their vision. The group's music has that vision and sound maintaining their vital part in reggae music in this day and age and this year of 2007 sees all four members reuniting after 22 years.

With the long-awaited reunion of the Wailing Souls - Winston 'Pipe' Matthews, Lloyd 'Bread' McDonald, Rudolph 'Garth' Dennis and George 'Buddy' Haye this year, 2007, they have already created a buzz in the music industry landing slots on some of the biggest reggae festivals in the world including Reggae On The River, Hollywood Bowl's annual reggae night in Los Angeles, and many more to come to complete a busy schedule for these roots reggae veterans.

As early as before the sun could rise Tuesday morning, YardFlex.com news room began fielding numerous phone calls from both local and international concerned fans wanting to know if the rumour circulating was of any truth. Some callers said that they heard Beenie Man stabbed up his wife and then cut the veins on his wrist, while others said D'Angel went clubbing and got back home too late – causing friction. Some people were saying feuding between the two had something to do with Marco Dean and they even went as far as to say it's probably because she was still making links with the Warlord Bounty Killer. The two lit up the screen and the video was further enhanced by the gyrating girls in the background all adding to exciting appeal of it.

Mind Control's accolades keep raining in

stephen-marley-junior-gong-beyonce-jay-z-rihanna.jpg"It's passion and soul that sets apart your average, competent reggae group from the likes of a Stephen Marley, who brought a nine-piece backing outfit - a guitarist, drummer, bassist, two keyboardists, a percussionist, two female backup singers, and a guy whose job it was to wave and twirl a Rasta flag all night - plus his younger brother Damian "Junior Gong" Marley to a very packed Showbox on Friday night for a phenomenal and frequently transcendent two-hour performance. Reggae's rarely sounded this joyful and intense, at least not to my ears."

(Seattle Weekly, April 14, 2007: Review of Stephen Marley at the Showbox - April 13)

"Mind Control is polished, assured and casually virtuosic in a way that most premieres are raw, edgy and ferociously single-minded. In the same way that hip-hop producers like Timbaland and Just Blaze have renewed rap by emphasizing the music's omnivorous rhythmic appetites, Stephen Marley updates Jamaican music for an era of globalized pop by tracing the connections between local styles."

"We are excited to be in business with Brian Ward and OnDeck Records," stated Monte Lipman, President Of Universal Republic Records. A new album has finally transpired bearing the title, Lets Get Physical, that befits his explosive energy. During his hiatus, Elephant Man did singles that attracted Hip Hop Mogul Sean Diddy Combs who in turn signed the 'Energy God' to his label Bad Boy Entertainment. "The signing is a fulfillment of one of my objectives in the musical industry," the Energy God said in describing that aim as crossing over and attracting top labels.

Elephant Man, who exhibits a 'bad boy' persona feels in good company with label mates such as R&B/Hip Hop statesmen and prodigies, Loon, Young Joc and Danity Kane. The synergy of Dancehall and Hip/Hop content should bring a dynamic album, set to be released June 26.

Lady Juni is back! In 1987 a 17 year-old student at Immaculate Conception High School for Girls, in Jamaica, released a song titled, 'Naah Get Punaani'. The song created quite a stir because of its 'moral breach' at a time when children were to be seen and not heard. As if that was not enough, the song sold gold - 500,000 records.
Oh yes! That means before the rise of Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Bounty Killa and Beenie Man, hardcore Dancehall had been introduced to the international mainstream!

"As a young girl who just liked music and was doing it for enjoyment, I did not become aware of how successful the song was until I made a trip to the United States, and the distributor told me the song was doing well in both white and black communities," explained the musician now known as Juni Platinum. She added that she was not expecting anything 'big' from the track, and as such she was pleasantly surprised because she was not following its progress.

Sizzla-Kalonji-reggae-SexyGirls.jpg

'Black woman and child for you I have so much love.' This is a line from a song voiced by Sizzla Kalonji in the mid - 1990s. At that early stage of his career, within the first 24 months of bonafied stardom, Sizzla's voice echoed a conscious message of love and appreciation for humanity and especially the black race. He has always remained firm in his belief that the music he creates can be a lethal weapon against immorality.

During an interview with YardFlex.com on April 5, Sizzla explained, "I am inspired by the most-high to separate what is right from what is wrong through my music. My music is guided by precepts like the laws of the land and the bible. Truth, justice and righteousness must be proclaimed."

half-pint-reggae-dancehall.jpgHalf Pint, the man responsible for some of dancehall's most classic melodic tunes, will be honoured this year at the 26 th annual International Reggae and World Music Awards.

The ceremony, which recognizes the best in reggae and world beat music, will be giving the special 'Producer's "Respect" Award' to Jamaican musical stars Half Pint, Gregory Issacs as well as American hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh.

Half Pint's work with celebrated producer King Jammy helped to usher a lighter, more relaxed approach to dancehall music, with content that was both romantic and socially conscious. Inarguably, his most famous track would be the international hit 'Greetings', which eventually set the tone for the 'ragga' style that was, at that time, taking over Jamaican music.

KAT is the girl next door, no matter where you're from. To say shes a crossover artist is an understatement. Hip hop, R&B, Merengue, Pop, Spanish Jazz, ballads, and dance, she does it all; in English and Spanish. Want proof? R&B superstar R. Kelly called her a "prodigy" and the famous Salvadorian singer Alvaro Torres referred to her as Selena. At age 12 she was invited by the "Queen of Merengue" Milly Quezada, to sing with her on stage in front of thousands of people, and in April of 2004 she opened for J Records recording artist Cassidy as part of the all Latino girl group Coquette. All this, and KAT is only 19 years old.

Despite her success, things haven't always come easy for KAT. Shortly after Kat Emperatriz De Luna and her family moved from the Bronx to the Dominican Republic, where she was raised in poverty. KAT spent her time listening to Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday records, which she imitated daily on her karaoke machine.

With a number of Stella performances from some of Jamaica's leading musical talents, the show proceeded from Saturday night through to early Sunday morning without any tensions or rifts.

When the YardFlex.com team arrived at minutes after 11 the smooth sound of Montego Bay based singer Mackie Conscious caressed the atmosphere. Soon after, he reflected on his musical career while singing lines from his latest hit, 'A Jus lucky mi nuh lucky'.

Hailing from Compton, this rapper is fresh on the heels of his cross-over success "It's Okay (One Blood)," which is an obvious nod to The Game's street affiliation. The song which samples reggae artist Junior Reid's "One Blood" was designed as a street single from his sophomore album, The Doctor's Advocate. The singer's official TV statement confirms that he will soon add Step-daddy to his title when he marries his former stylist and mother of three, Tameka Foster. The rumours started when Foster was photographed with a new engagement ring on her finger.

The R & B Mega Star said a wedding could take place before the end of the year.

Initially his mom and manager, Jonetta Patton, was against the relationship as Foster was married to someone else. Patton fired Foster as stylist alleging lacklustre styling. Foster has since had a divorce and is ready to walk down the aisle once again.

KOREXON1.jpgCelebrating the best in Canadian music, the Juno Awards 2007, crowned Canada's top musicians for 2006 "Maple Leaf" style, in Saskatoon, Saskachewan's Credit Union Centre, on Sunday April 1. Korexion garnered the Juno nod for Best Reggae Recording for his EP, Xrated. Described as an artist on a mission to spread reggae and love worldwide, Korexion created 3 killer tunes on the EP, that the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), voted number one.

Born Keipher Scott, Korexion hails from Trench Town, Jamaica, where his musical journey began. Teaming up with Omar, his brother, Korexion formed a singing duo called "Two Of A Kind" that consistently gained top prizes in Jamaican talent competitions. Expanding horizons was inevitable and so came the decision to migrate to Toronto, Canada. This stride is one Korexion describes as a step from one concrete jungle into another, as his first experiences in Toronto were rough. Perseverance and what has lately been doubly confirmed as incredible musical capabilities, led Korexion to the folk at Kornerstone label and way beyond.

stephen-marley-junior-gong-beyonce-jay-z-rihanna.jpg"It's passion and soul that sets apart your average, competent reggae group from the likes of a Stephen Marley, who brought a nine-piece backing outfit - a guitarist, drummer, bassist, two keyboardists, a percussionist, two female backup singers, and a guy whose job it was to wave and twirl a Rasta flag all night - plus his younger brother Damian "Junior Gong" Marley to a very packed Showbox on Friday night for a phenomenal and frequently transcendent two-hour performance.

ShopBoyz-rockstar-SexyGirls-beyonce-jay-z-britney-spears-naked-girls.jpgUniversal Republic Records has entered into an agreement with OnDeck Records to market, distribute and release the hot new genre-defying hip hop trio the SHOP BOYZ, whose debut single "Party Like A Rockstar," scored as the 2nd most added new single at urban radio last week, continuing to build excitement ahead of its official Tuesday, April 10 single release date.

Launched by OnDeck Records, the SHOP BOYZ' initial breakthrough has been forged by Atlanta label's CEO, Brian 'Bingo' Ward, who has skillfully guided the groundbreaking trio's rapid trajectory into the mainstream. The group's riotous blast of hip hop-meets-rock has transformed the southern hip hop landscape, emerging from Atlanta's underground urban music scene and inspiring a new punk wave among the south's hip hop tastemakers. With major labels in hot pursuit of the group since the beginning of 2007, the three members, Fat, Meany, and Sheed are being hailed as new pioneers of the genre. "We are excited to be in business with Brian Ward and OnDeck Records," stated Monte Lipman, President Of Universal Republic Records. "Brian is a great recruiter of talent and the SHOP BOYZ exemplifies the cutting edge of a bold new force in hip hop. Their willingness to go beyond the cookie-cutter approach in every way fits our label's artist-driven mission like a glove."

elephant-man-p-diddy-badboy-physical-SexyGirls.jpgOneil Bryan a.k.a Elephant Man, has been keen on getting another album out since his last in 2003 called, Good 2 Go.

As expected, the affiliation will see the Energy God collaborating with a myriad of 'Top' artistes. This upcoming album features Wyclef Jean on the track FiveO.. The signing and his new album should breathe fresh life into Elephant's musical career, to a level comparable to the days when he sparred on tracks with the likes of Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson.
